Hungary's largest solar power plant to be built in Debrecen

The foundation stone of the BMW Manufacturing Hungary Kft. solar farm was laid in Debrecen on 3 September, according to a statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. The 71 football field photovoltaic system will be the largest within the group and will also be Hungary's largest industrial solar power plant. Speaking at the event, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó said that the investment underlines Hungary's position as the absolute global leader of the green economy of the future.

Significant infrastructure improvements to support investment

The Minister reminded that in a few months' time, the first BMW cars built on a pure electric platform will roll off the production lines in Debrecen.

"In addition, this is the area where solar energy will be most integrated into production, as more than a quarter of the energy demand will be served by this solar farm."

He pointed out that the government has decided on infrastructure developments in the Debrecen region worth around HUF 400 billion, supporting industrial investments.

World's second largest electric battery manufacturing capacity to be built

He added that last year the production value of the automotive industry was already over 13 thousand billion forints, and for the sixth year in a row Hungary has been among the world's twenty largest automotive exporters. At the same time, he said, it was at least as much of an achievement that all this had been achieved while continuously reducing emissions, which was possible thanks to the expansion of green energy capacities.

He explained that Hungary will soon have factories of all three German premium car brands, while it will also have the world's second largest electric battery manufacturing capacity.

We exceeded the 6000 megawatt capacity ahead of schedule

He stressed that industry is also building and using more and more solar power plants in Hungary. According to him, there are 278,000 domestic and nearly 3,500 industrial solar power plants in operation in Hungary today.

"We have planned that by 2030 the solar capacity in Hungary will reach 6000 megawatts. In comparison, we are now at 6700 megawatts," he said.
