After two centuries of operation, economic life at the iconic power plant finally came to a standstill in 2009, and the Ministry of National Economy says the time has come to revive it.

Miskolc's industry may have a great opportunity, as a study has been completed to establish the basis for the revitalization and industrial utilization of the Diósgyőr Steelworks area, the Ministry of National Economy (NGM) announced in a morning statement.

It was reported that the Universitas Miskolcinensis Foundation, commissioned by the predecessor of the NGM, prepared and submitted to the Ministry a study on the possibility of revitalising the Diósgyőr Steelworks (DAM), which would provide the basis for the industrial use of the area.

It has been closed for a decade and a half, it's time to revive it

The Minister stressed that the study will lay the foundations for a long-term solution to the problem of DAM, which closed down in 2009 after more than two centuries of operation, and was once one of the country's largest metallurgical complexes and the largest employer in the region.

As they wrote, in relation to the area

The strategic objective is to create a sustainable industrial park that will accommodate the development of local economic actors, attract new value-creating businesses, create new jobs, expand green spaces in the city and preserve the industrial heritage of the DAM.

Building a sustainable and innovative industrial park

On the basis of the completed study, negotiations will begin in 2025 between the Ministry of National Economy, the Miskolc city government, the University of Miskolc and local businesses in order to implement the vision of a sustainable and innovative industrial park in cooperation with the local government and local stakeholders, the Ministry of National Economy said.

The domestic strategy also gives an important role to the metal and steel industries

Minister Márton Nagy also stressed that the study is in line with Hungary's overall industrial strategy, which states that the raw material producing industries, including the metal and steel industries, have a key role to play in sustainable industrial development.
