Up to one billion aluminium cans will be produced annually at the new Makó plant

Hong Kong-backed Benepack Hungary Kft. Macón is building a packaging materials factory in the industrial park, with the foundation stone of the €65 million (HUF 25.3 billion) investment laid on 26 September. The infrastructure to support the plant will be completed in the next 12 months and the factory should be operational in September 2024. An energy, water and wastewater network will be built to enable the plant to expand.

In Mako, the state supports not the car industry but the food industry

Josános Lázár, Minister of Construction and Transport and local Member of Parliament said at the ceremony that it was a conscious decision of the government to replace the automotive industry with an investment related to the food industry in Makó.

He said:

With the world's population set to grow in the coming years, there will be a need for good quality, healthy food at every point on the globe. And the city has a centuries-old tradition of producing quality food.

120 jobs created

Csang Je, Managing Director of Benepack Hungary Kft., CEO of parent company COFCO Packaging, said the company is establishing its Mako plant for aluminium cans as a second milestone in its European development. The investment is aimed at enabling the company to provide more cost-effective and environmentally friendly packaging solutions to its customers - beer and soft drink producers - in Hungary and the surrounding countries.

The Mako plant will operate as a new manufacturing base with 120 employees, capable of producing up to one billion two-piece aluminium cans per year.
