STRABAG's Czech subsidiary involved in a major railway development

The Czech subsidiary of STRABAG has won a large-scale investment project. STRABAG Rail a.s. is reconstructing the historic Masaryk railway station in the heart of the Czech capital, according to dba-bau.com.

Commissioned by the Czech railway company Správa železnic, the €137 million project includes upgrading and extending the railway tracks and building a spectacular pedestrian platform above the tracks to provide an urban link. Work is scheduled to start this January and should be completed by the end of summer 2027. STRABAG Rail a.s. will carry out the construction work in a joint venture with STRABAG s.r.o..

Integrating the station into the urban environment

Masaryk Station, one of the oldest railway stations in the Czech Republic, receives more than 40 000 passengers a day. The redevelopment will not only significantly increase the capacity of the station, but will also better integrate the station area into the surrounding urban environment. The number of platforms will increase from seven to nine. The existing platforms will be made accessible, the overhead contact points, signalling and overhead lines will be upgraded and additional through platforms will be built.

The architectural highlight of the project is the triangular-shaped, 8600 m² steel bridge over the tracks, which provides a pedestrian connection between Hybernská and Na Florenci streets, unobstructed access to each platform and allows for the transition to the metro or to the prestigious buildings designed by Zaha Hadid architects next door.

Part of the platform will be planted with greenery to create a quiet zone in the centre of the metropolis. The green area will be irrigated with a rainwater management system.

The whole project is complex, requiring close coordination between the different professions, and in a very confined space. The construction is also complicated by the need to ensure almost uninterrupted rail traffic. The STRABAG has been present in the Czech Republic since 1991 and with around 4,150 employees, it produces around €1.1 billion worth of output per year.
