What is being built?
Bródy project: the contractor has been found
In 2019, the expansion of the law faculty of Pázmány Péter Catholic University was announced, which will include the renovation of the historic building located at 15 Bródy Sándor Street in the Palace Quarter. Part of the complex's development has already been completed, and now phase II can begin, as Épkar Zrt. with a bid of HUF 662 million, which was announced at the public procurement tender announced at the beginning of the year.
One of Pest's most famous apartment buildings
The Chimney Sweep's House, a single-storey, independent building with a basement, built in the 1850s in the neoclassical style, was designed by Károly Hild in the 1850s on the commission of an Italian chimney sweep, Mihály Devecis (Del Vecchio). The descendants of the successful entrepreneur carried on the chimney sweep profession in Budapest for several generations. The iconic building in the Palace district of Józsefváros was named after the chimney sweep statue that stood guard over the gate, indicating the mastery of the builder. After the renovation, the building will house the central offices of Pázmány Péter Catholic University.
While the upstairs rooms are connected by internal passageways next to the arcade, the ground floor is divided into two groups of rooms with independent access by the doorway. The reconstruction of the ornate building involves a net renovation and conversion of 1347 m2 of usable space, and the completion of approximately 50 m2 of painting. The street façade has already been restored, and the chimney sweep, which was removed four years ago, will also re-preserve the restored façade, but approximately 325 m2 of the interior façade wall area and about 212 m2 of the openings still need to be restored. The contractor Épkar will also be responsible for the landscaping of the courtyard after demolition and soil replacement, where he will have to carry out grassing, paving, planting trees and ground-covering shrubs.
Could be completed in almost a year
Although the mass of the building will not change during the conversion, Phase II
- renovation and restoration of the internal façade,
- the transformation of interior spaces,
- the doorway and the basement windows,
- and the restoration, renovation and conservation of the courtyard.
The contractor will have 300 days to renovate and, to a lesser extent, restore the internal façade of the building and carry out the above-mentioned works, while protecting the historic spaces.
