One of Budapest's four trauma centres has received a major upgrade

On 17 September, the traumatology centre of the St. John of Buda Centre Hospital in Buda was inaugurated, which has undergone a renovation of outstanding importance in several respects. As Zsolt Ralovich, the hospital's director general, said at the event, the reconstruction and modernisation of the traumatology centre began last November.

The development was a "leap forward in time by decades", which was much needed, as the traumatology department of the Szent János Hospital is one of the four trauma centres in the capital, and the only one in Buda, he explained. The institution has a territorial coverage of more than 700,000 people and receives patients 24 hours a day from the entire Buda region and the western agglomeration. The hospital's traumatology department treated more than 60,000 patients last year.

According to the Director General, the improvement of the care organisation was inconceivable without renewing the technical content.

The traumatology department in building 26 has been renovated with a new outpatient clinic, a new shock absorber, new small operating theatres, new examination rooms, corridors, wards and waiting rooms. The patient reception building has been renovated to house the triage and outpatient departments, the diagnostic block has been consolidated and an intensive care unit has been created

The lifts have been renewed, new air conditioning equipment has been installed in the guards and operating theatres, among others. The reception and outpatient departments have been air-conditioned.

Construction work continues

According to the Director-General, the work does not end with this development. Work is continuing on Building 26, with all the wards on the first floor to be air-conditioned by next summer, and the complete heating upgrade at the Diós Trench site is nearing completion. The reconstruction of the building housing the ophthalmology department has also started, he said.

Among others, Minister of Finance Mihály Varga also spoke at the event, pointing out that what is happening at St. John's Hospital is a decade-long process. The reconstruction of the old buildings, the renewal of the 32 specialised clinics, the reconstruction of the clinical block on Kútvölgyi Road and the construction of the nurses' home are ongoing challenges. He stressed that they can only continue these improvements if the economy is in a state that allows them to provide the resources.
