New Catholic secondary school and sports centre to be built in Mórahalom
The Diocese of Szeged-Csanád is building an education and sports complex in Mórahalom, with the local government offering the necessary real estate to the church free of charge, it was announced on 19 September.
The first phase of the project will include the construction of two training pitches with the necessary service facilities, expected to be completed early next year, followed by the construction of three more football pitches.
In the second phase of the development, the 16-classroom secondary school and the associated dormitory will be built. The whole project is expected to be completed within three years.
Infrastructure for the education of almost ten thousand children is being developed
Mayor Zoltán Nógrádi recalled before the signing of the agreement on the transfer of the properties that the government declared the diocese's educational and sports development a project of high national economic importance in 2018. The aim of the investment is to create the infrastructure necessary for the education, talent management and sports activities of the almost 10,000 children belonging to the St. Agota Child Protection Service, which is maintained by the diocese.
The local building code has been amended, roads have been designated, and a utility development programme has been launched
- added the mayor, among others.
A park forest may be created in Szeged
László Kiss-Rigó, Bishop of Szeged-Csanád, said that the diocese planned to build sports fields and public education institutions as a continuation of the Szent Gellért Forum built in Szeged. However, „unworthy political attacks” were launched against the project and the diocese. Part of the population also protested because they believed – wrongly, according to the church leader – that the investment would worsen the city's air quality. Thus, the decision was made: if the necessary funds are available, the area next to the Szent Gellért Forum will be developed into a park forest, the bishop announced.
More than two hundred young people from Szeged play sports in the Grosics Academy, and the existing fields in the Szent Gellért Forum are not sufficient for their training, so they had to rent space for them in the city and the surrounding settlements, the Bishop pointed out.
