Korona Hotel: renovation of Miskolc's iconic building to start soon

One of Miskolc's largest investment projects is set to begin soon. Architecture and talent management are intertwined at a deeper level, they represent two sides of the same coin, said Balázs Orbán, chairman of the board of trustees of Mathias Corvinus Collegium (MCC), in his welcome speech on Tuesday before the professional forum held in the city.

Standing empty for decades

He added that when the Miskolc training centre was being set up, the Korona Hotel was one of the first locations considered, as the building in the city centre had been vacant for decades. MCC bought the building three years ago and since then has carried out a number of conservation works in line with the heritage protection standards.

He said that they had obtained the building permit for the entire renovation, and on the basis of that they had launched a public tender to find the best contractor.

After the completion of the works, the city will be enriched with a 12,000 square metre complex of buildings that will be renovated and reconstructed as a listed building.

Restaurant and cultural space to open

He noted that around 4,000 square metres of this will be used for educational purposes, with classrooms, offices, a 50-room student residence, and event and conference space. In addition, the Széchenyi Street part of the building will house a "restaurant with a last-century atmosphere but with modern content" to host public, scientific and cultural events in the city, he said.

The new MCC training centre is scheduled to open to students in the 2027-2028 academic year.
