Semmelweis University's Centre for Theoretical Education is expanding with a new building complex
Semmelweis University's series of investments continues – now with the construction of EB Hungary Invest Kft. in the 9th district, in the block bordered by Thaly Kálmán – Tűzoltó – Viola – Balázs Béla streets in the 9th district. The flexible educational space designed by Közti Zrt. will be accessible to medical students 24 hours a day, in line with the “open university” concept.
The three previously separate plots are currently occupied by disused residential buildings. After their demolition, the University intends to construct a new educational building that would function as an extension and development of the Centre for Theoretical Medicine (CME I), located opposite the planning area.
Open up the complex with bright courtyards
On the site created after the merger, after the demolition of the existing buildings, an educational building with a gross floor area of 24 500 m2, 3 basement + ground floor + 4 or 5 floors will be created.
The front walls of the existing buildings on Viola and Fireman Street, which are locally protected, will be retained, with new reinforced concrete slab and wall structures built behind them in the geometry of the original structures.
In the smaller wing of the L-shaped plot, two illuminated courtyards will be created, with curtain wall facades to maximise natural light. In the wider wing, an internal atrium courtyard is planned.
Multifunctional auditorium
A large 1000-seat auditorium with no internal support, requiring a high ceiling height, has been placed under the atrium courtyard. The lowering and the 4.5 m floor height of the ground floor will allow for a larger double-height space.
The hall, which can be divided into four sections by mobile walls, can be converted from a flat-floored hall into a staircase auditorium, making it suitable for lectures, events or even concerts by the university orchestra.
Hundreds of square metres of library
The first floor atrium will also include 4 separate study rooms for 15-20 students. The Tűzoltó Street wing will also house the library, the first floor student centre and its community space opening into the atrium, as well as the open consumer area of the restaurant - buffet, on an area of about 700 square metres.
The connection between the levels is provided by an elevator block and representative single-arm steel stairs at the lobby end of the atrium courtyard, as well as three escape staircases at the corners. To accommodate the cars required for the operation of the building, a 3 level underground garage will be created with a total of 118 parking spaces.
"Traditional" university education building
The planned building is designed for theoretical education, to accommodate and serve the students as well as possible, to create a university life outside the classroom, so it does not contain laboratories or special classrooms.
