Montenegro to improve transport by building a 1.7 km sea bridge

Montenegro is to build a bridge over the Gulf of Kotor: linking Kumbor and Lustica would realise a five-decade-old vision in the Adriatic country.

According to a report by the architecture portal Gradnja.rs

The bridge, part of the Adriatic-Jón motorway, would be 1,700 metres long and 50 metres high, and would stand on three piers, shortening the road between the two shores of the bay, Kumbor and Lustica, by around 60 kilometres, and linking Herceg Novi on the Croatian border with Budva.

The designers of the bridge used the Peljesac Bridge in Croatia as a model, both visually and in practice, although it was important - as in Croatia - that large ships heading for the bay could pass under the bridge.

Construction to start in five years

Several ideas have been put forward in recent years to link the two shores of Kotori Bay. Several sites have been considered for a possible bridge, an underwater tunnel has been discussed, and the current ferry crossing has been mooted.

According to the feasibility study, the construction of the bridge, which will cost around €200 million (HUF 80 billion), could start as early as 2030 and is expected to be financed by a Chinese loan, as is the case with most of the Montenegrin motorways.
