The M30 motorway reconstruction is underway
In February, STRABAG started preparing the reinforcement of the unstable soil structure on the Sikszo section of the M30 motorway, which was affected by the closure. The motorway, which was opened in 2021, was to be closed to traffic in February 2024. Independent experts, geotechnical engineers and geologists, have been called in by the contractor to investigate the causes of the slippage of the road structure and have developed proposals to remedy the problem.
Motorway blocked due to a landslide
In addition to the STRABAG, the road manager MKIF also carried out drilling to identify the source of the problem. Speaking at a public forum in Sikszó on 17 February 2025, József Pántya, Építési és Közlekedési Minisztérium's Deputy State Secretary for Road and Railway Construction, said: 'The soil has "broken" at a depth of about 6 metres under the embankment on a nearly 400-metre stretch of the M30 motorway, and a slow but significant sliding has started. The 10-12 m high embankment started along a so-called slip slope. The core of the problem is the slip slope at a depth of about 6 metres below ground level, which should not be there, as groundwater was being transported under the embankment that was not detected by the soil mechanics carried out under the permit design and export plan."
Reinforced concrete piles are used to stabilise the affected section
Among the solutions proposed by the contractor, ÉKM, with the involvement of the Department of Geotechnics of the Budapest University of Technology, chose to drill 755 reinforced concrete piles with a diameter of 60 cm to a depth of 20-24 m after the complete demolition of the right track, and then to rebuild the embankment and the track body on top of them after the concrete had been poured.
On the left-hand track, the track will be demolished and rebuilt from the pavement level to a depth of four metres. The length affected by the intervention: 300-350 metres.
More will be added soon!
