New section of the Vértes-Bakony cycle route under construction

The "Cycling infrastructure development in Sárkeresztes" project could be an important precursor of the Székesfehérvár-Vértes-Bakony main cycling route, in addition to increasing mobility within the municipality and improving traffic safety. In the longer term, the aim is to build further sections towards Székesfehérvár and Söréd, so that the regional cycle path network can better serve two-wheelers and hikers.

Not only will the length of the cycle lanes be extended, but a signalised crossing will be completed on the very busy main road 81, making it safer for pedestrians and cyclists and providing access to the bus stop with a new pavement.

2.4 km cycle path to be built

The STRABAG specialists took over the site at the beginning of the year. They plan to complete the construction of the cycle track by the end of September, with planting taking place at the project sites during the rest of the autumn.
The 580-metre section of the 2,400-metre cycle path will have a width of 3.5 metres and will be shared by motorists and cyclists. A further 1,852 metres will be built with a width of 2.55 metres for cyclists.

The new crossing will minimise the risk of accidents

A 145-metre stretch of the 81 main road will be widened, a 12-metre long crossing will be built for the new traffic light crossing, and a 130-metre stretch of pavement will be built up to the bus stop.

This development will provide safe access to the bus stop on the Székesfehérvár side of the 81 main road.

Previously, people on their way to the bus could only cross the busy Highway 81 in an extremely dangerous way due to the lack of a designated pedestrian crossing and traffic calming island. In the morning hours, there is a continuous queue of cars from Mór to Székesfehérvár, making pedestrian crossing risky and quite difficult.

Cycle paths to be completed soon

The construction works will be carried out by STRABAG specialists in three major units. Construction manager Gábor Lepsényi informed our portal that the construction of the cycle paths on the mixed-use section of about 580 metres is already 50 percent complete.

The 1852 metres on the outskirts of the municipality have already reached an even higher level of 75 per cent completion. On this section, a bridge consisting of prefabricated frame elements, 6 metres long and 4.4 metres wide, is being built on a 50-centimetre-thick crushed stone bed and a 25-centimetre-thick reinforced concrete slab. In addition, a embankment will be constructed by installing prefabricated elements on both the upstream and downstream sides of the framework element.
The third main element of the project, the construction of the signal crossing on the very busy section of Highway 81, the median island and the pavement leading to the bus stop, is also at the half-way stage.

Working on a busy main road is a challenge for both contractor and road user

The construction manager added that one of the biggest technical challenges of the project is the organisation and execution of the works for the intersection of Highway 81. These works can only be carried out during school holidays due to traffic demands.
Gábor Lepsényi said that the construction of the crossing point will require the creation of a half-lane traffic light diversion, which will be a burden for both contractors and road users, as Highway 81 carries significant transit and freight traffic.

A further challenge is that if there is an accident or congestion on the surrounding motorways or roads, motorists and truckers will seek an escape route on Highway 81, putting further strain on the corridor. In the event of major congestion, traffic signal diversions are suspended and signalmen attempt to reduce congestion in some directions by providing longer passing times.

Community involvement, communication and sustainability

A forum for the public was held in the Mud Cross community centre before the start of construction. The owners of the gated areas were informed by leaflet, while regular consultations were held with the road manager and the municipality on traffic restrictions and the current works.

The bikeways are built on a 50-centimetre-thick crushed stone base with a seven- or eight-centimetre layer of asphalt. The road will be widened to accommodate the construction of a central island and a traffic light at the crossing on Highway 81, which will also receive a new binder and wearing course.

The project will use around 3,900 cubic metres of crushed stone and 1,600 tonnes of asphalt from the STRABAG mixing plant in Leter. In addition, 4,150 metres of kerb will be constructed. The new pavement will be paved with paving stones. The crushed concrete from the demolition will be reused in the construction.

The works by STRABAG are progressing on schedule and professionally, with full completion expected in January 2026 - but the cycle path will be ready for use by the public by autumn 2025.
