Public space development covering more than 30,000 square metres launched in Mohács

The public space development project in Mohács, including the renewal of the main square and the surrounding streets, as well as the row of arches of the Church of the Assumption, covering a total of more than 30,000 square metres, and the renewal of the national memorial site in Sátorhely, will begin.

Expected to be completed by summer 2027

At the project's site handover event on 2 October, it was revealed that the entire area of Széchenyi Square, the arcade of the Church of the Assumption and its surroundings will be renewed as part of the downtown development. In addition, the section of Szabadság Street between Rákóczi Street and Széchenyi Square will be renovated, the pedestrian street will be upgraded with street lighting and new street furniture, and parking and traffic will be optimised.

During the project, uninterrupted public use of the city centre is guaranteed, and next year's bus parade will be held in the main square as usual. The final phase of the renovation of almost 31 000 square metres of the city centre is expected to be completed by summer 2027.

A chapel will be built in the central place of the cemetery

Until next April, an underground exhibition space with interactive elements will be set up at the memorial site, while bones from mass graves that have been identified as belonging to a single person will be given a final, dignified resting place in a tidy cemetery on the site.

The construction will also include the reconstruction of the Hades Gate, the reconstruction of the memorial square and the entire garden, and the construction of the reception areas for the monuments symbolising the Central European unity.

The memorial chapel and the Calvary will also be renovated

As part of the Mohács 500 programme, which includes government-supported developments and events in the region to mark the 500th anniversary of the battle, the Mohács Battlefield Memorial Chapel will be renovated.

The works will include a full exterior and interior restoration, renovation of the memorial chapel and the Calvary, modernisation of public spaces, construction of a pavement along the Bég stream, and installation of modern street lighting and CCTV, the programme manager Mohács 500 Nonprofit Kft. told MTI earlier.
