Lightning-fast and environmentally friendly vehicle cleaning in Szeged – Trial operation has begun in the new MÁV wash hall

After more than 20 years, machine-based railway carriage cleaning is returning to the southern Great Plain city following the completion of the new carriage wash at Szeged-Rendező station, announced Zsolt Hegyi, CEO of the MÁV group, on his social media page.

According to his statement, the development was financed from the company's own resources, amounting to nearly HUF 800 million. Trial operations have already begun, with the official launch expected in the first quarter of 2026. In his post accompanying the video presenting the new facility, the CEO recalled that one of the 10 commitments made by the Minister of Transport is to renovate and refurbish station toilets throughout the country and to ensure the cleanliness of IC trains from departure to arrival with the help of travelling cleaners.

The facility is capable of cleaning several types of locomotives.

„However, we are not only doing more for the cleanliness of the vehicles inside, but also outside,” he added. The CEO reported that with the help of the new equipment, Tram-Trains and InterCitys departing from Szeged, as well as several types of locomotives, can now be cleaned on site.

Environmentally friendly, water-saving technology is used in the laundry room.

In the 80-metre-long wash, cleaning vehicles takes only 2-3 minutes, compared to the previous 90 minutes. The equipment has a water purification efficiency of 84 per cent, so it only requires 16 per cent clean water from the water network, which makes it particularly environmentally friendly, added Zsolt Hegyi.
