What is being built?
The renovation of Hódmezővásárhely’s iconic building continues
The western façade of Hódmezővásárhely Town Hall is being renovated as part of the FERROÉP Zrt. project – according to the file located at public procurement data. In this project, with a net contract value of 195 million forints, the western wing of the town hall – a listed building over 130 years old – is undergoing a complete façade renovation.
The town hall, built in just two and a half years to a design by Lajos Ybl (Miklós Ybl’s nephew – ed.), was handed over in 1894. The building is in an eclectic style, featuring historicist elements reminiscent of the Renaissance. The main façade is adorned with triangular and semicircular window sills, Rococo cornices, balustrades and rustication.
The reconstruction of the north façade and the tower has now been completed
According to the contractor’s website website states that the contract for the renovation, which is now getting underway, was signed on 1 April by András Nemesi, CEO of FERROÉP, with the local council. The construction deadline is 220 days.
According to their report, the aim of the project is not only to renovate the building aesthetically, but also to carry out a professional restoration in accordance with heritage conservation regulations. The reconstruction work on the north façade and tower has already been completed, and the current project is being carried out as a continuation of that work.
This is what happens in the project
According to the published public procurement data, the works involve the complete restoration of the plastered façade surfaces, including, amongst other things
- partial removal of the existing plasterwork (1,150 m²),
- the application of new layers of plaster (estimated area: 900 m² of plaster),
- the reconstruction of the plasterwork and ornamentation (20 m² of restoration, conservation of 5 m² of plaster ornamentation),
- as well as the uniform surface treatment, which includes the painting of 1,600 m² of façade and the exterior painting of 89 existing wooden doors and windows.
As part of the carpentry work involved, the side entrance on the west façade of the town hall will also be completely refurbished.
