Road building
This is how the preparations for the upgrading of the M1 motorway to six lanes are progressing
Our newspaper regularly reports on the historic development of the M1 motorway, which is currently in the preparatory phase, and the approximately 80-kilometre extension We first wrote about the project at the end of October as part of a comprehensive interview, in which Tamás Németh, CEO of MKIF Magyar Koncessziós Infrastruktúra Fejlesztő Zrt. CEO, our readers learned that preparatory work will begin this autumn, and the actual expansion will start on 1 September 2025 at the latest. MKIF Zrt.
The project involves resurfacing around 80 km of the M1 from the M0 motorway to the Concó rest area and widening the M1 to 2×3 lanes + ITS (the latter is short for Intelligent Stopping Lane).
preparation phases based on information from MKIF, and recently published another report. According to this, work is being carried out in several places alongside the track, which does not yet affect traffic on the main track:
Now, to help with the other preparatory work (test ploughing, archaeology, utility mapping, arson, etc.), the clearing of the scrub and other vegetation in the ravine has begun.
Need space for new lanes, but they will replace cut plants
They explain that this is also important because in the section to be widened, bushes and shrubs would hinder excavation and all other construction activities, and this preparation will speed up other work and allow for more efficient work organisation.
The motorway will not be left without a green surface, and trees, shrubs and bushes will replace the eradicated shrubs after the new carriageway is built, closer to the fence, they add.
Working closely with environmental professionals
Tamás Németh told our newspaper earlier, "Nature has already conquered certain areas of the maintenance surfaces near the motorway. In addition, of course, there are thickets and small forests that would hinder the expansion, and these will have to be cut down. In their place, replacement forests of the same area as the felled forests will be established where the state requests it, and more trees will be planted in the rest areas."
The leader also pointed out that this is a serious legal and environmental task."Few people may think so, but here too we have to meet strict professional requirements, in close cooperation with environmental experts. The transplanted plants will be monitored for a period of time", he stressed.
