Várpalota central square gets a roundabout

With the support of the Széchenyi Plan Plus programme, Várpalota is renovating and transforming Szabadság Square, located in the centre of the town in Veszprém County. As can be seen from the public procurement data , Varga Fuvarozási és Építőipari Kft. was selected as the contractor for the project, worth approximately HUF 216 million net, at the end of last year.

The work site was officially handed over to the company at a recent event, during which the client local government, the technical inspection experts and representatives of Varga Kft. held a meeting to discuss all the key points of the project and the requests of the public utility providers – according to a report by the Várpalota News Centre.

Due to the structure of the city, Liberty Square has a high traffic volume, which is one of the reasons why its traffic surfaces are in a very worn-out state: the pavements are in constant need of repair.

The works, which will start on 10 February, will include a complete renovation of the square and a new roundabout at the junction in front of Thury Castle.

More than 2,000 square metres of asphalt pavement will be renewed, around 2,200 square metres of pavements will be renovated and street lighting fixtures will be installed. The replacement of the natural gas pipeline and the renovation of the sewerage system are also included.

By the end of the summer, locals want to be using the renewed site

"The contractor has a total of almost seven months, so the deadline for completion is 26 September 2025. But we would like, and we have indicated this during the preliminary negotiations, that by the time of the Várpalota Days at the latest (the event will be held this year at the turn of August and September - editor) the square will be fully completed and ready for use."
