New construction method for the PERI on the German viaduct wins prestigious award

The innovative formwork system allows the slab to be concreted without any breakthroughs: as well as improving the quality of the structure, it significantly reduces construction time and minimises traffic disruption.

A German construction company has won the bauma Innovation Award for its PERI system, according to a statement from the formwork and scaffolding systems manufacturer and supplier.

Every two years, Munich hosts bauma, one of the world's largest and most important construction trade fairs, with hundreds of exhibitors and tens of thousands of visitors. The prestigious bauma Innovation Award is presented at the event, recognising forward-looking, outstandingly useful and sustainable developments in the construction industry. This year's winner in the 'Construction' category was the German company Adam Hörnig Construction (AHA) for its solution PERI VCT VARIOKIT Composite Track, which was used in the renovation of the Thulba viaduct.

Allows the track slab to be concreted without any breakthrough when passing under the superstructure

For the project to replace the more than 50-year-old Thulba viaduct on the A7 motorway in the Thulba river valley in Bavaria, AHA has opted for a completely new construction method; the second steel-composite superstructure will be built using the PERI VCT VARIOKIT Composite Track system.

The innovative formwork system, which runs under the superstructure, allows the slab to be concreted without any breakthroughs - this not only improves the quality of the structure, but also significantly reduces construction time and minimises traffic disruption.

Significantly shorter construction time

The technology allows the slab to be constructed with almost no gaps, as the formwork does not penetrate the structure, avoiding cracks and ensuring even load distribution. In addition, the unobstructed top access allows more efficient reinforcement work, which significantly reduces construction time.

Faster construction is not only economically advantageous, but also environmentally beneficial, as it allows the bridge to be built in less time and with lower CO₂ emissions. In addition, the almost uninterrupted slab-on-grade construction also has a positive impact on the lifetime of the bridge, leaving a more favourable ecological footprint in the long term.

More than 200 applications received for the bauma Innovation Award

The bauma Innovation Award 2025 was presented in cooperation with the Munich Trade Fair, the German Machinery and Equipment Manufacturers' Association and the construction industry associations. The award honours outstanding technologies that contribute to environmental protection, digitalisation, mechanical engineering, construction and research.

Of the 208 entries received, 52 made it to the final round, from which the jury selected 15 candidates. The evaluation criteria included practical applicability, economic potential, degree of digitalisation, environmental impact, resource efficiency and improvement of the working environment.
