The technology used on the Déli Körvasút is being praised in the international press
Thanks to the expansion of the Déli Körvasút, we are frequently able to report on the specialised movement of large railway bridge structures under construction: A total of twelve superstructures are being moved using bridge-sliding technology as part of the project. However, some bridges are also being moved transversely to ensure the continuity of rail traffic.
Among the latter is the railway bridge over Soroksári út, which is marked on the map above with the label Közvágóhíd (as the bridge is being built at the new Közvágóhíd railway station – Ed.). At the junction near Budapest Park, two new steel bridges of identical design will replace the existing structures.
Our newspaper also reported in detail on the installation of the first southern steel bridge in July, and now the international railway journal Railway PRO has published a report on it. The magazine points out that the 2,200-tonne, 108-metre-long and 20-metre-wide bridge structure was installed using Dutch Mammoet technology.
We managed to sort it out in just one weekend
During the operation, the bridge – which had been assembled on site – was raised to the required height using hydraulic jacks. It was then that the platforms of a Dutch company specialising in the transport of large loads and the movement of heavy structures – known as SPMTs (Self-Propelled Modular Transporters – ed.) – came into their own. These self-propelled, rolling platforms were positioned beneath the structure and moved the bridge into place in a multi-stage process.
According to the article, the conventional method would have required a much longer closure of Soroksári út – lasting several weeks – and numerous construction tasks, including the erection of temporary shoring towers, pile driving and the deployment of large-scale drilling rigs. Using the technology described above, however, the work requiring the road closure was completed over a single weekend, between 24 and 26 July.
The northern bridge is due to be built in a year’s time
„We always find a solution, because if there isn’t anything in our fleet that can solve the problem, we’ll build it”
– said Jordy van der Hoevent, project manager for Mammoet, as quoted in Railway PRO. According to the article, the same method will be used for the northern bridge, which is scheduled to be installed in the autumn of 2027.
According to earlier press reports, the southern bridge is expected to be opened to traffic on a temporary basis at the end of October.
