Keleti station closed for four weeks for the biggest technical renovation in a decade

From 25 August, work will start on one of the country's most important railway stations.

The group's CEO, Zoltán Hegyi, announces a large-scale railway renovation project on his Facebook page posted on his Facebook page. The head of the state-owned company said that Keleti railway station will be completely closed for four weeks from 25 August.

In a statement, he said that after last year's derailment of two locomotives highlighted the need to speed up the renovation of one of the country's most important railway stations. He referred to the "first aid" the station received last summer for safety reasons.

Most of the construction work will start now, however, and will require a full closure from 25 August to 20 September. Keleti station will be the biggest project following the 2019 renovation: most of the works will concern the technical areas, while a smaller part will be in the passenger areas.

These works are carried out

During the suspension of traffic, specialists and machinery will be working around the clock to carry out a number of maintenance tasks that will improve reliability and enable higher track speeds, summarises mavcsoport.hu on information published on mavcsoport.hu. During this process

Skis, turnouts and more than 2,000 sleepers will also be replaced;
bedding will be replaced and three kilometres of bedding will be reinforced;
14 kilometres of tracks are regulated;
and about 16 km of the overhead network will be repaired.

In addition, maintenance and replacement of the electrical distribution equipment supplying the operational and passenger areas of the station and its connection to a remote monitoring system are planned. Last but not least, the platform between platforms 1 and 2 will be rebuilt, maintenance will be carried out on all platform roofs and repairs will be made to the platform walkways.
