New railway station added to the industrial zone under construction next to BMV in Debrecen

The second phase of the road, rail and utility infrastructure development for the Debrecen North-West Economic Zone is completed. The project was presented to the press by the investor Építési és Közlekedési Minisztérium (ÉKM) on 31 July.

The recently inaugurated Debrecen Fatér station and the newly completed additional facilities of the Macs industrial terminal were both financed from domestic sources: the former investment was worth HUF 11.6 billion, the latter HUF 2.1 billion.

At the Field Station, seven new railway tracks have been completed, one older track has been renovated, 13 kilometres of overhead railway line have been built and ten sidings have been constructed to ensure the marshalling of freight trains. The project will also include the installation of two gantry cranes in the area. The Macs industrial terminal also includes a 720 square metre office building and a road access and control system.

Thursday's event was also attended by the Deputy State Secretary for Roads and Railways ÉKM. József Pántya stressed that major railway investments have been completed in the area near the BMW car plant in the last two years, but that work will continue in the next year and a half. He said that the construction of the railway line between Debrecen and Macs was an outstanding element of the developments, and also highlighted the electrification of the line between Macs and Balmazújváros and the renovation of the station in Balmazújváros.

He also drew attention to the lifting of speed restrictions between Hortobágy and Ohatpusztakócs, which will result in a 15-minute reduction in journey times on the Debrecen-Hortobágy-Tiszafüred railway line when the works are completed next year.

József Pántya also pointed out that four major road junctions are currently being reconstructed in the inner area of Debrecen, with plans to rebuild the Sandkert flyover and to increase the capacity of the Kassai road, which will significantly improve accessibility to the city.

After the rail logistics terminal, a road terminal will be built

Lajos Kósa, a Fidesz MEP for the region, said that after the capital, Debrecen is now one of the largest, or perhaps the largest, logistics centre in the country. He noted, however, that logistics developments in economic zones are taking significant traffic congestion away from the inner areas of the city.

László Papp (Fidesz-KDNP), mayor of Debrecen, said that once the factories being built in the 500-hectare north-western and 710-hectare southern industrial zones start production, it will be reflected in the GDP growth of the Hungarian economy. He said the North-West zone will be operated by GYSEV, which is one of the largest rail logistics terminals in Eastern Hungary.

In its vicinity a road logistics terminal capable of accommodating more than 250 lorries is being built, and a new NAV headquarters is also being constructed, so customs clearance will also take place on site.
