This street in the centre of Pest will be extended with parking lots and greened

A section of Csengery Street in Terézváros is being reborn: the cobblestones are being removed, the pavement is being paved and a Stockholm tree-planting strip is being created.

The old cobblestone pavement is being replaced, making a section of Csengery Street in Budapest's 6th district greener and more liveable. During the development carried out by HE-DO, plants will be planted and street furniture will be installed, which will increase the comfort of residents.

The area between Aradi Street and Szondi Street will be affected by the renovation, which will also alleviate parking problems: a 45-degree parking lane will be created to allow more vehicles to wait.

According to Gellért Timár, Chief Architect of HE-DO, the project consists of 5 main parts:

  • Road and parking lane construction
  • Environmental planning
  • Stormwater drainage
  • Plumbing replacement
  • Construction of irrigation network and drinking fountains

"After the temporary traffic engineering was completed and the parking lots were cleared, the half-track was paved with cobblestones and the water main was replaced. At the moment the excavation of the soil for the Stockholm tree planting strip is in progress and soon the installation of the planting medium will start in phases"- said Gellért Timár.

Green islands and recycling

The new road will be paved with asphalt, and most of the cobbles will be reused in the parking lanes to promote recycling. The project will involve the demolition and reconstruction of the old 10 m wide cobbled pavement and the asphalt pavement on both sides. The wide carriageway will be narrowed to 3.5 metres, with a 45-degree parking lane on one side and a parallel parking lane with green islands on the other.

The pavements will also be renewed and paved with paving stones, and the downtown district will become even "greener" with the planting of 19 trees and hundreds of shrubs and bushes.

A special feature of the project is the Stockholm planting strip. This type of construction solution has become popular in recent years in Hungary, especially in Budapest.

The system consists of creating a planting pit - a lane - 1.5-2.5 metres wide and 1.3 metres deep. The pit will be filled with biochar, 63/180 stone material. A special soil mix will be used around the trees to be planted, and sand will be interspersed with stones in other areas.

Periodic irrigation of plants is provided by connecting the guttering of several buildings via a drainage surface. In addition, a separate irrigation network will be installed to ensure proper maintenance.

The implementation of the Stockholm planting strip will result in the construction of a new water main and domestic water connections to the street. The area will also include a drinking fountain, bench, bike storage, planter, dog waste and communal waste bins, and low ornamental fencing.

The funds for the project will be provided by the Municipality of Terézváros, Budapest VI. district, under the Terézváros2030 public space renovation programme.
