What is being built?
The most dangerous road junction in the capital of the Danube bend is to be rebuilt
It's no piece of cake – if you can get through the morning rush hour traffic at the intersection of Terézia Street and Petőfi Sándor Street in Esztergom. The construction of the junction, nicknamed the "sponge cake roundabout" by the residents of Esztergom due to its shape, had been on the agenda for a long time due to the risk of accidents and frequent traffic jams. In the spring, the city council signed a contract with Magyar Közút Nonprofit Zrt. for the reconstruction of the intersection. After taking over the work site on 30 April, the experts of STRABAG began the first phase of work at the Dobogókői-Petőfi-Terézia-Kálvária út junction with the involvement of subcontractors.
Completely rebuild the dangerous crossing
According to the company's representative, the project involves the reconstruction of the section of the 1111 between sections 35+236-35+394 km, a length of 370 metres. In addition, a roundabout will be built on the Esztergom section of the Budakalász-Dobogókő-Esztergom link road at the junction of Dobogókői út - Petőfi S. út - Terézia utca - Kálvária út.
Renovation of public utilities and construction of a rainwater drainage system
The upgrading of the transport network will be accompanied by the modernisation of utilities in the area affected by the works. The current phase of the works will involve the construction of nearly 400 metres of new drinking water mains and 635 metres of new electricity lines.
The telecommunications network will also be upgraded and the stormwater drainage system will be rebuilt. For the latter:
The brick pavement section will be replaced by a 160 centimetre reinforced concrete storm sewer on a 110 metre stretch in the direction of Terézia út.
The large-diameter rainwater channel will be connected to additional branches of 125 and 100 cm diameter, which will be used to drain the Dobogókői and Kálvária roads.
Restricted but safe passage of traffic during work
The works are taking place at a key junction in the city's transport network. For this reason, at least one direction of through traffic must be guaranteed at all times. The work has therefore been divided into phases, with Petőfi Street being the first to be closed. Once this is lifted, Terézia Street will be closed to motorists, and finally, a "no entry" sign will be installed on the Dobogókői út branch.
The construction of the roundabout and the utility upgrade works, as well as the asphalting of the section affected by the works, will be completed by the end of the year by the STRABAG specialists and the subcontractors involved in the works.
