What is being built?
One of Budapest's most beautiful buildings, which stood mutilated for decades, has been reborn
The Hauszmann programme to rebuild Buda Castle has reached a new stage, the Government Information Centre (GIC) told MTI on Friday. According to the statement, the Hauszmann programme for the reconstruction of Buda Castle has reached a new stage. After the Castle Garden Bazaar, the Main Guard, the Riding Hall, the St. Stephen's Hall and the Carmelite, new buildings of the Castle of Budapest have been restored to their original beauty.
The reconstruction of the former Royal Hungarian Ministry of Finance, where the Ministry of the Interior has moved, has been completed next to the Matthias Church. And on Dísz Square, the former Red Cross headquarters has been completely rebuilt and the Prime Minister's Office is moving in.
It stood mutilated for decades
The more than 120-year-old former Ministry of Finance building has been completely reconstructed. Thanks to the government investment, one of the most beautiful buildings in Budapest has been rebuilt on Szentháromság Square. The neo-Gothic palace stood mutilated for decades until its recent renovation, after being hit by several bombs during the Second World War and deliberately remodelled by the communists.
The former Red Cross headquarters, designed by Alajos Hauszmann, was completely rebuilt on Dísz Square, and from 1920 it housed the Royal Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The original building was completely destroyed by bombing during the Second World War and then by demolition in 1946, so it had to be rebuilt from scratch. The building next to the Carmelite will be occupied by the Prime Minister's Office in February.
The gardens, moats, promenades and parks of Var will also be renewed
It was pointed out that the reconstruction of Buda Castle does not stop here, with intensive renovation work currently underway in several locations. The Palace of Buda Castle is being completely renewed, and the reconstruction of the Archduke Joseph Palace, which will house the Constitutional Court, and the former Defence Headquarters, where the Military History Institute and Museum will move, are also at an impressive stage.
Together with the reconstruction of the Buda Castle, the gardens, battlements, promenades and parks of Buda Castle will be renewed. In 2026, an exhibition on the history of the palace will open in the northern wing of the Palace of Buda.
They stressed that the reconstruction of Buda Castle has a significant impact on tourism and cultural life in Budapest. "The community buildings that have been reborn so far are not only architectural attractions, but also popular cultural venues. The reborn Hungarian capital has been voted at the top of numerous tourism rankings in recent years," the Government Information Centre said in a statement.
