What is being built?
The new MCC headquarters in Szeged is ready
A major investment has been completed in Szeged: the Matthias Corvinus Foundation (MCC), which performs tasks related to education and public education, has transformed the former Szeged Chamber of Commerce and Industry in accordance with its own principles and training concepts.>Matthias Corvinus Foundation (MCC), which performs educational and public education tasks, has transformed the former Szeged Chamber of Commerce and Bartók Cultural Centre building on Vörösmarty Street in accordance with its own principles and training concepts. The project, which completes the previously interrupted historic building renovation, is one of MCC's projects to revive Hungarian architectural heritage, about which our newspaper has also published several articles.
As previously mentioned, the project was awarded to Build IT Zrt. following a public procurement procedure at the end of 2023. During the works, significant historical renovation and internal functional conversion were carried out. We have previously explained in detail what spaces were planned for the transformed building.
Among other things, a
- a representative classroom was built,
- and the lobby was connected to the square facing Deák Ferenc Street.
- On the first floor, the four two-person dormitories will be replaced by a single-room office,
- and a meeting room and staff lockers on the gallery level.
- In the attic, classrooms were created instead of dormitories,
- and a larger glass area was opened towards the inner courtyard.
The monumental building housing the new centre was originally completed in 1896, designed by Albert Víg and under the direction of Ferenc Raichl J. Now, at the request of MCC, the architect Tibor Hajós Pro Architectura Prize-winning architect, who was involved in the work that started in 2017, has taken on the continuation of the project, by drawing up the outline plans for the reconstruction of the building.
"We must be present where the greatest minds in the world are working"
Today, on the occasion of the opening of the newly completed MCC centre in Szeged, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and Nobel Prize winner Ferenc Krausz were among those who attended the handover ceremony – writes vilaggazdasag.hu. The newspaper adds, citing Délmagyarország, that the centre, located in the heart of the city, has been revived as a talent development institution and a venue for cultural and public events.
Science is essential for the survival of the nation, the Prime Minister said at the event. Orbán said, among other things, that if we want to maintain the cultural quality that can be called Hungarian civilisation, we must be present where the greatest minds of the world are working.
The Prime Minister said that Hungary currently ranks 21st in the European Union in terms of the amount spent on innovation. The goal is to be among the top ten in the EU by 2030 and among the top ten in the world by 2040.
It is generally agreed in Hungary that we cannot be competitive, and perhaps even survive, without this breakthrough in science
- stressed the Prime Minister.
