The largest baking plant in Central and Eastern Europe is to be built in Tata
The foundation stone for the Ceres Sütőipari Zrt. bakery, the largest of its kind in Central and Eastern Europe in terms of capacity, was laid on Tuesday in Tata. The facility, which is being built as part of a 24.6 billion forint investment, will be capable of producing 100 tonnes of sliced toast bread baked in loaves every day.
Health-conscious eating is also a key focus
István Mikos, the company’s managing director, previously told MTI that the 14,000-square-metre production hall is being built on a seven-hectare site purchased by the company, with the support of Ceres’s parent company, the Czech Penam group.
Ceres currently operates in Győr and Miskolc, primarily producing everyday breads, loaves, toast breads and sweet rolls, as well as products suitable for a health-conscious diet.
Nearly a thousand projects received funding under the three calls for proposals
Boglárka Illés, State Secretary for Bilateral Relations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, spoke at the foundation-laying ceremony about how the Hungarian government and the European Union had supported the implementation of the 42.6 billion forint investment with a grant of 4.2 billion forint. The first phase of the facility will create 100 new jobs.
In his opening address, Minister for Agriculture István Nagy stated that the government regards the food industry as a strategic sector, and that three calls for proposals have already been published for funds earmarked for the food and processing industries. The minister added that, to date, 947 applications had received a positive decision under the previous two calls, amounting to more than 500 billion forints.
The company is the legal successor to the Győr and Surrounding Area Bakery Company, founded in 1953, and currently employs 200 people. According to publicly available financial statements, the company’s net turnover in 2023 was 13 billion forints, with a profit after tax of 1.2 billion forints. Turnover fell to 12 billion forints in 2024, with a profit after tax of 0.4 billion forints.
