Road building
Safer and more predictable traffic in Nyíregyháza
In the spring of 2022, work began on widening the south-western section of the Nyíregyháza ring road to four lanes. The development will see the construction of a 1.2-kilometre four-lane section of the ring road in the Érkert district, which has been missing for decades, as well as a two-lane cycle path and pavement to ensure the safety of road users.
The project is KE-VÍZ 21 Zrt. and Zemplénkő Kft., with a total value of HUF 5.6 billion.
István Raska István, the project manager of the Ke-Víz 21 Zrt. informed us about the current status of the construction.
"Most of the utility replacements have already been done, so the project is now focusing on road and bridge construction. On the bridge over the Ér Stream, the deck and curb construction has been completed and the backfill and leveling slab, as well as the seepage slabs, are currently under construction. On the KE-VÍZ 21 Zrt. section, the asphalting of the new main carriageway is being prepared, followed by the transfer of traffic to the new carriageway and the reconstruction of the existing roadway. In parallel with the construction of the main track, the construction of pedestrian and cycle paths is underway and the installation of traffic lights at almost all junctions has started."
Work on the bridge is in full swing: once the structure is completed, traffic will be diverted here, and then the reconstruction of the Simai road junction around the bridge can begin. As soon as the technical state of completion of the constructed sections allows, traffic will be diverted to the new roadway and the demolition and reconstruction of the existing sections will begin.
Coordinating traffic restrictions is a major challenge
When asked about the difficulties of implementation, the expert said:
"There have been some unexpected challenges that we had to deal with, but we're used to it. We have a great project team, our subcontractors are professionally prepared, and at the same time we have a lot of support from our colleagues, managers and stakeholders working on the project. Perhaps the biggest headache is the situation of utilities built in previous decades, which are usually in the way."
He then underlined:
"Given that the construction area is a very busy road section, the planning, construction, maintenance and coordination of traffic restrictions was a major challenge from a design and construction perspective. Traffic restrictions are currently in place for the entire section and traffic is currently flowing without any major disruptions."
The project is due to be completed by the beginning of January 2024, so the construction works are scheduled to be completed by the end of 2023.
