Construction of the Bátonyterenye relief road progressing well

In September 2022, the foundation stone laying ceremony for the new bypass road on main road 23 between Bátonyterenye and Kisterenye was held foundation stone laying ceremony. The project is being implemented as part of the Építési és Közlekedési Minisztérium investment (as the successor to NIF Nemzeti Infrastruktúra Fejlesztő Zrt.) by the Colas Út Építőipari Zrt. and HE-DO Építő Zrt. consortium at a cost of HUF 14.2 billion. The work site was handed over in May 2022.

A 2×1 lane bypass of 2.3 kilometres will be built, ensuring the internal bypass of the main road 23, which will also be completely reconstructed, and a 2.19 kilometre long north-south road connecting two parts of the settlement, Kistenyeré and Nagybátony. The project also includes the construction of related roundabouts, parking lanes and bus shelters, as well as the renovation of railway crossings, bridges and cycle paths in the area. Street lighting, planting, water engineering, environmental protection and traffic engineering works will also be carried out.

We asked the representatives of the contractors about the progress of the works on the bypass road in Nógrád county. Gergő Szeles, Colas's construction manager, said that the entire project is being carried out jointly by the consortium, with the road structure layers being built jointly between the two companies.

Track sections constructed by Colas Út Zrt:

• Bypass 23 between kilometres 0+850 and 2+300;
• the Kisterenye access road 23120. between kilometres 0+000 and 0+767;
• Road 2301 between kilometres 0+090 and 0+640;
• and the Bátonyterenye crossing between kms 0+980 and 1+887.

The protective layer has been completed in several sections

According to the specialist, bypass 23, road 2409 and road 23120 are completed at earthworks level. On the crossing section, the works on the storm drain replacement, kerbing and track construction are progressing according to schedule.

In relation to the upcoming works, he pointed out: "the construction of roundabouts and parallel roads on the bypass section of the main road 23, and the construction of the road base and the road structure layers on the external section of the road 2409 are the next tasks. On the inland section of road 2409, the construction of the roundabout pavement and road structure will begin.

On the crossing section of road 23 in Kisterenye, the reconstruction of the road structure and the construction of gate gates are underway in several locations. The construction of the rainwater channel is also continuing.On road 2301 at the Mátraszele junction, the cutting works are continuing and the construction of the repair and protection layer and the gateway gates are starting.With the riverbed correction of the Zagyva, the bank paving works are ongoing."

BIM is also used during construction

As regards the special features of the construction, the architect pointed out that the track layers are laid using a three-dimensionally controlled automatic machine chain. The Connected BIM technology will be tested and applied in the project.

"The organisation, access to the work site and the execution of the works are greatly complicated by the fact that the railway is crossed in three places, the Zagyva stream in three places, the Kazár stream in two places and the Tarján stream in one place, so our contract includes the construction of a total of 7 bridges and 2 level railway crossings. Due to the railway and stream crossings, temporary roads had to be constructed in several directions to improve access to the bridges and to build embankments between them.

The reconstruction of the crossing section of road 23 is a challenge due to the geometry of the inland area and the need to work with constant traffic", he said.

Construction of the works is also progressing well

Jenő Reichardt Jenő, Chief Construction Manager of HE-DO described in detail the sections where the company is carrying out the construction of the track structures:

• Bátonyterenye bypass between kms 0+000 and 0+850;
• Link road 2409 between kms 2+150 and 3+567;
• Current Highway 23 between mileposts 0+075 and 0+978.

"On the bypass, we are up to the earthwork protection layer level for road construction, which is 50 percent complete. Of the six structures on the bypass, the three single-span bridges are over 90 percent complete, and the structural beams of the other three larger three-span bridges have been grouted, and we are over 60 percent complete.
