Road building
A name that is a guarantee in road construction
Since its inception in 1991, road and bridge construction has been a key area of activity for SWIETELSKY Magyarország Kft. Since its inception in 1991, road and bridge construction has been a key area of activity, and the potential of asphalt production has also been recognised in this context. Established as a subsidiary of the Austrian company SWIETELSKY, the company has continuously expanded its capacity since its first sites were established. One of the company's main strengths is that its nine sites cover virtually the entire country, enabling it to participate more effectively in rural investments, while its eight asphalt mixers make it easier to serve road development projects in different parts of the country.
Since SWIETELSKY manufactures not only for its own projects but also to order, in the mid-2000s, considered the golden age of road development, it produced 550,000 tonnes of asphalt per year (the peak was 560,000 tonnes in 2006), but even in more modest years, it still reaches 350,000-400,000 tonnes. It can be said that during the period of rapid development, the company was among the top three in terms of asphalt production, and it is still among the top six today.
The company's innovative approach, which serves niche markets and unique needs, and its professional perfectionism enabled it to participate in large-scale road construction projects launched in the early 2000s.
In our article, we reviewed the company's largest projects with Krisztián Honti, regional manager of SWIETELSKY Magyarország Kft. Large Facilities. We asked István Skultéty, business director, what he sees as the strengths of SWIETELSKY.
The M6 was the breakthrough
In 2004, the construction of the Vecsés-Üllő bypass section of the M4 motorway was the company's first major milestone in the field of road construction. This was followed a year later by the grandiose M6 motorway project: between 2004 and 2006, the section between Érd and Dunaújváros was completed under a PPP scheme, which is considered a significant investment in the history of Hungarian road construction. The 60-kilometre motorway was built in just 18 months, including the associated structures, motorway engineering and police unit. The construction was carried out by SWIETELSKY Magyarország Kft., Bilfinger-Berger Kft. and PORR Kft. on behalf of M6-Duna Autópálya Koncessziós Zrt., dividing the section into three parts.
Krisztián Honti participated in the project as construction manager. Today, he is the regional director of large-scale infrastructure developments (in January 2022, he became the <a href="https://magyarepitok.hu/aktualis/2022/01/Engineer of the Month in January 2022, and spoke in detail about his dedication in an interview).
„We installed an asphalt mixer in Dunaújváros specifically to support this project and to serve this road construction. This investment and material demand brought our 2006 to a peak, with our company producing the most asphalt that year, a total of 560,000 tonnes – a volume we were only able to reach again in 2020,” explained Krisztián Honti.
After that, they could participate in important projects.
„In the following years, the economic crisis also slowed down SWIETELSKY somewhat. However, after making our mark in the industry with the completion of the M6 motorway, we were able to participate in more and more large-scale projects after 2010, following on from what had previously been mainly local projects. These included the construction of the M43 motorway, the Szolnok section of the M4 motorway, the Seregélyes bypass section of the 62 main road, the Várpalota-Veszprém section of the 8 main road, and the western bypass section of Székesfehérvár.”
Subsequently, the company worked on several sections of the four-lane expansion of Route 21, as well as on the Fertőd-Endréd section of the M85 expressway and the M44 (between Kunszentmárton and Csabacsüd). Another significant project in 2021 was the development of the Szolnok bypass section of the M4 motorway, where SWIETELSKY built a total of seven bridges over a distance of approximately 3 kilometres. In 2022, it played an important role in the construction of the 260 Sajószentpéter-Berente bypass.
„Our company carried out these investments using its own machinery and asphalt mixing capacity. During the years mentioned, we participated in the construction of a total of 155 kilometres of motorways and expressways. Of this, 75 kilometres were constructed by our company,” summarised the regional director.
„We love challenges”
Krisztián Honti and the entire road construction team are enthusiastic about tasks that involve something unusual, something extra, i.e. tasks that allow them to capitalise on the decades of experience and professional knowledge they have accumulated so far.
„It is also beneficial for the company to implement projects that may not be understood by everyone, or that other companies are wary of, or perhaps see as more risky. We particularly like these kinds of projects. One example is the construction of the 260 road bypassing Sajószentpéter and Berente rel="noopener">260 road, which was a new route built on embankments in the floodplain. During the construction period, we experienced several floods on the Sajó. Because of this, we had to build bank protection with Reno mattresses."
„The Road 25, where we are essentially building a third lane (this project is currently SWIETELSKY – ed.) The mountainous route and forest environment made preliminary surveying and planning difficult. This required even greater discipline and continuous monitoring from our colleagues during construction in order to eliminate any inaccuracies.
We developed the mountainous section, which is considered a curiosity, with soil reinforced with geogrids and gabion retaining walls. This was the first project where we used this solution, but we now have considerable experience in this area.”
However, the implementation also presented the team with other unforeseen problems.
During the works on the Borsod section, aquifers were discovered that had not been anticipated based on preliminary drilling. (For similar reasons, the M30 motorway between Szikszó and Miskolc slipped, and repairs are currently underway – ed.) When a cut slope was built and the embankment widening was completed, the freshly topsoiled cut slope slipped. „The geotechnical designer carried out additional drilling, which revealed that there were also layers of water under the embankment. This jeopardised the stability of the embankment. To solve this problem, we need to build a deep drainage system. This is currently underway and we hope it will be completed in September.”
Continuing to list the special features, the regional director also mentions the Hungaroringet, which, thanks to the special knowledge of the SWIETELSKY, is constantly receiving road construction tasks. We asphalted the race track nine years ago. In June, the company built the wearing course rel="noopener">the company built the wearing course with three finishers running side by side, covering a length of 620 metres and a total area of 8,866 square metres.
A complex project with numerous challenges
Krisztián Honti considers the Kaposvár intermodal hub to be one of his greatest professional achievements. It was implemented entirely by SWIETELSKY Magyarország in 2017, with almost all of its business units participating.
„This is an impressive facility, which was larger than previous ones in terms of both duration and challenges. Almost every unit of our company left its mark on it: the building construction division built the bus station and the car park, our public utility engineers implemented the drinking water, sewage and rainwater drainage systems, and the staff of the Kaposszekcső chief engineering office carried out the asphalting and paving work. The Esterházy pedestrian and bicycle bridge, which was handed over as part of the junction, won the Bridge of the Year award, of which we are particularly proud. The crossing is a beautiful steel structure with a cable-stayed bridge and a fifty-metre pylon – it was a wonderful project,” summarised the regional director.
According to his list, they also built motorway bridges and railway overpasses – these are usually reinforced concrete structures, but some were made of steel. Among the projects currently underway, it is important to mention the Cserhalom Street transport and public space renovation project in Budapest's 13th district, where a road bridge and a disused railway bridge are being demolished and two new bridges are being built over the Rákos stream.
Innovations in road construction
The company is committed to the continuous development of digitalisation. The BIM team is constantly working to ensure that this software is used in as many projects as possible. Krisztián Honti also mentioned a few specific projects.
„We need to use 3D surveys in road development as well, as it makes our work much easier. When widening the mountainous Route 25, we purchased a laser scanner, which made it much easier and faster to create a terrain model, and then we were able to monitor the construction more efficiently.”
In addition, road builders have already worked on several projects using a measuring station-controlled finisher: for example, on the development of the Budapest-Balaton cycle path, and this is how the CKT layer of road 260 was built. „This is particularly useful for greenfield investments, as it requires less geodetic preparation. We just upload the digital file to the measuring station and the machine does its job almost by itself, levelling with an accuracy of 1-2 millimetres. This gives us a CKT base of such quality that we can asphalt it with confidence.”
The company has built strong pillars over the decades.
István Skultéty, Business Director, sees the competitiveness of SWIETELSKY in its wide geographical coverage and the expertise of its specialists.„With our sites, we are present in almost the entire country. We have asphalt mixers at eight locations, so we can participate in rural road development on better terms and more cost-effectively than other companies that would have to transport the asphalt from further away or purchase it at the construction site. Our colleagues maintain excellent personal and professional relationships with local authorities, and they are familiar with the mines and the smaller and larger material suppliers through their contacts with local investors and subcontractors. This is a great advantage when it comes to tenders and construction projects.”
The business director highlighted the company's team of experts. The infrastructure division currently employs around 270 people (including manual and intellectual workers). Their experienced, well-travelled engineers have made a name for themselves in the profession through numerous large-scale projects, and it is important for the company to retain them in the long term.
„Staff turnover is not typical for us. We have reliable, highly experienced construction teams who have been working together for many years, even decades, led by trustworthy foremen, site managers and project managers. This enables the road construction division to participate flexibly in both smaller and larger projects and to further expand our acquired knowledge together.”
Reliability is one of the main attractions
This is confirmed by customer satisfaction feedback and by the fact that the volume of warranty repairs is minimal at the company.
„Generally, there are no problems with deliveries. We strive to find the right solution and compromise beforehand, always opting for flexibility. We endeavour to meet deadlines without compromising on quality. We believe it is important that if we see that there are fewer resources and opportunities on the market, we offer our customers new alternatives, cheaper but high-quality technical solutions.”
The business director also mentioned that, compared to other similar companies, the parent company gives us a relatively high degree of entrepreneurial freedom. Flexibility is evident here as well.
Although our Hungarian division's turnover has declined slightly due to economic conditions in recent years, the Swietelsky Group has experienced significant growth in recent years.
This growth has also led to a demand among company executives for regulation and modern corporate management systems. The company is currently undergoing a major digital transformation: the introduction of corporate management systems (SAP, iTWO, digital methodology, BIM) and the systematisation and rethinking of decision-making roles are providing us with a new management tool. All this means more documentation, but in return, we can obtain data and information about the work done so far more quickly and easily, and we can also monitor and map market processes better.
Together with Railway Technology
There are also several projects in which SWIETELSKY Magyarország Kft. works together with its sister company, SWIETELSKY Vasúttechnika Kft.. The two leaders agree that the cooperation is effective and beneficial, as they have similar corporate structures and complement each other. The shared IT system also helps in this regard.
„For industrial facilities or even public investments involving complex tasks – such as railway construction alongside station building, utility installation, landscaping, road improvements, and railway and road bridge construction – our company can handle all of this in-house. Together, we can offer investors a much better professional proposal for a given project.”
The two companies" joint completed projects include the development of the Csepel port, the Kaposvár intermodal hub, and, of course, their largest joint project, the reconstruction of the M3 metro line.
„We are currently working together on several public procurement projects, and we have high hopes for the future. We would be delighted to participate in the construction of the Gubacsi railway bridge, the new North and South Balaton railway stations, the Almásfüzitő-Komárom railway, and the development of the Budapest tram network.”
The private sector has grown in importance
Over the past two years, there has been a noticeable decline in public works projects in the industry, particularly road development projects. István Skultéty, Business Director, confirmed that in view of the current situation, SWIETELSKY is opening up even more to private investment, although the company has already proven itself in this segment. „If a previous private investor places another order with us, that is very good feedback for us. We have many partners with whom we have been working for a long time because we can offer them favourable price-value ratios in addition to the right quality. We are confident that municipal infrastructure investments will resume soon, that there will be more developments in Magyar Közút, and perhaps that there will be more and more tenders in Építési és Közlekedési Minisztérium.
