The Hatvan-Somoskőújfalu railway line was prepared for the new timetable with track maintenance.
Even before the winter timetable change came into effect, line 81 was reorganised, resulting in more frequent services on the Hatvan–Somoskőújfalu line, with trains now running every hour throughout the day, according to the MÁV Zrt. on 15 December 2025 social media page.
Zsolt Hegyi wrote: „Since summer, slow signals have been following one another on the non-electrified main line running through the Zagyva valley. The timetable has deteriorated critically, delays have become commonplace, so it was clear that the new structure introduced with the December timetable change would not be sustainable with the existing track parameters.”

According to his description, in recent weeks, they have been working hard to prepare line 81 for the timetable change, focusing on eliminating the most critical faults causing slow signals.
In order to improve timetable regularity, track maintenance work was carried out on the Hatvan-Pásztó line section, which was most affected by delays. As a result, slow signals were eliminated over a total length of approximately 5,000 metres.
Night work on the Pásztó–Somoskőújfalu section
Work will continue next week on the Pásztó-Somoskőújfalu section, covering a further 3,400 metres, with night-time work to avoid disrupting train services.
He also announced that new platforms had been built at Szurdokpüspöki station and Lőrinci stop, improving passenger comfort, with further comfort-enhancing measures planned for the latter in the spring. In addition, the second track between Hatvan and Selyp has been made operational, allowing trains to run on it as well.
High-load and technically complex track section
Zsolt Hegyi wrote: all this took place on a line that serves both local passenger and freight traffic, and where the country's third steepest standard gauge railway line operates between Salgótarján and Somoskőújfalu. Several teams also worked on the 86 (Vámosgyörk-Újszász) line during the related works.
According to the announcement, following the completion of work on line 81, the trains will be reassigned to line 86 in order to achieve significant improvements there as well, with a view to ensuring regular branch line service.
The goal was clear: to ensure that the new timetable worked not only on paper but also on the tracks, emphasised the CEO.
