What is being built?

A hundred-year-old plan comes true in Gödöllő with the building of a church

The new Premonstratensian abbey church was inaugurated, which will be used by members of the 900-year-old order, teachers, former and current students of the Premonstratensian school centre, Premonstratensian kindergarten students and members of the local community.

The building of the abbey church was a long-standing, century-old ambition of the Order. The Prime Minister referred to this in his letter on the occasion of the dedication of the church. In his welcome address, Viktor Orbán said that "this building will now not only be the fulfilment of an old dream and the jewel of the town, but also a symbol of the unbroken and unbreakable faith and will with which you have survived the loss of your schools abroad, the 40 years of communism and the difficulties of a new beginning after the regime change."

The decorations reflect the Premontrian, Catholic and Hungarian traditions

At the inauguration of the church, Minister of State Miklós Soltész praised the strength of Christianity, which has been conveying its message for 2000 years despite the difficulties.
László Vécsey, the representative of the region, said that the dream of the members of the order, a dream of generations for eight decades, has been materialized with the construction of the church.
Péter Piusz Balogh, Abbot of Gödöllő, said that the building and its decoration reflect the Premontrian, Catholic and Hungarian traditions.

Nine hundred years of treasures preserved in the storms of history

The Premonstratensian community of Gödöllő was founded in 1923 by Dr. Menyhért Takács, Prepost of Jasovár, with the Premonstratensians who, after the decision of Trianon, became undesirable persons in the successor states after the abolition of the Premonstratensian grammar schools in Kassa, Rózsny and Oradea. In 1929 the community also had a college of theology. In 1950 the state dictatorship dissolved the community, like the other monastic orders. Their building complex was given to the University of Agricultural Sciences. Reorganised in 1989, the community built an order house and a chapel, and then opened an eight-grade Premonitory High School with lay teachers in two smaller buildings. Over the years, the school added more buildings, and in 2000 it graduated its first pupils.

The basic aim of the church building is to enable the members of the Order, the local parish, the teachers, students and alumni of the Premonstratensian school centre, the community of the Premonstratensian kindergarten and all members of the extended Premonstratensian family to participate in the liturgies in a dignified way.

The design and construction cost HUF 3.9 billion, and the equipment cost a further HUF 600 million. The construction was supported by the government to mark the 900th anniversary of the founding of the Order in 2021.

The combination of sacral architectural traditions and contemporary use of materials in the church

The huge sacred building, with 700 seats, is located near the primary and secondary school of the Premonstratensian Order.

The two-towered, transept-shaped Premonstratensian church follows the tradition of sacral architecture. However, in its use of materials, it represents the 21st century, with its reinforced concrete supporting structure and brickwork, metal and glass.

The main nave with a pedimented transept is connected to two side aisles, a nave and a transept.
Next to the church will be a building, which will be used for educational purposes, but also as a pilgrimage shelter and library. There are also plans for a sports hall and a new religious house.
The church will be consecrated at a later date.
