Several railway bridges and sections of track are being renovated in the north-east of the country
The MÁV Track Operation Zrt. in the EU Public Procurement Bulletin published a call for tenders for the renovation of the 100c Mezőzombor–Nyíregyháza and the Miskolc–Rakamaz section of the 80 Budapest–Sátoraljaújhely railway line.
The company will enter into a framework agreement for the execution of the works up to a total budget of HUF 1,958,842,655 plus VAT, which also includes the 10% contingency fund.
Maintenance is being carried out by MÁV using its own funds and forms part of the previously published announced renovation package.
According to the notice, between 27 May and 30 August 2026, the MÁV Group will carry out major maintenance work on several sections of the 100c railway line during a complete closure, in order to prepare for the expected increase in traffic. Track closures will also be in place between 31 August and 11 September 2026 for the Taktaharkány–Hernádnémeti–Bőcs section of Line 80. The track closures do not affect all operations.
The section of track is currently electrified and runs on single or double tracks; it has an axle load of 210 kN and a permitted speed of 120 km/h. The sections affected by the works are subject to speed restrictions in numerous places, according to the tender documentation.
Complex works on bridges and tracks
One of the most significant elements of the development work is taking place on the Hosszú Bridge, where the necessary work is being carried out during a complex track closure. During the works, the railway track will be dismantled along a stretch of approximately 200 metres on the bridge structure, after which the necessary structural repairs will be carried out, including the replacement of components and the upgrading of rivets. Corrosion protection will cover an area of more than 6,600 square metres, whilst hundreds of bridge girders will be replaced along the entire length.
As part of the project, the sleepers will be realigned, the electrical insulation restored and the railway track rebuilt. In addition, intermediate supports will be reinforced at seven locations to ensure the structure’s long-term stability. The plans also include the installation of inspection platforms and bridge inspection vehicles as contingency measures.
In the case of the Ladik Bridge, two piers are being reinforced, and inspection platforms are being installed on several structures. Modernisation work is also underway on the Tokaj Tisza Bridge, where the installation of bridge inspection vehicles will facilitate future maintenance.
The project also includes the demolition of the disused road overpass in Tiszalúc, which will be carried out in accordance with the relevant demolition and overhead line plans.
Overall, these measures contribute to improving the operational safety of the railway infrastructure and reducing traffic restrictions.
