The HE-DO has increased the capacity of Debrecen’s key transport hub

The redevelopment of the road junction on Szoboszlói út in Debrecen has been completed; the contractor, HE-DO, finished the project 77 days ahead of schedule. Építési és Közlekedési Minisztérium (ÉKM), Deputy State Secretary for Road and Railway Construction, provided an on-site update on the details of the project.

It’s not just a matter of a few extra lanes

József Pántya noted that four major road junctions are currently being upgraded in Debrecen, the first of which – the Szoboszló út junction, through which 35,000 vehicles pass daily – has now been completed. The total value of the four projects is nearly 14 billion forints, which is being funded by the ministry using purely domestic resources, he added. He noted that the Szoboszló út project was completed at a cost of 2.5 billion forints gross.

The Deputy State Secretary explained that the improvements at the junction will result in faster traffic flow, less congestion and safer travel; they do not merely involve the addition of a few extra lanes, but are characteristic of Debrecen itself and represent a step forward in the city’s development.

This is what happened during the project

As we reported earlier, the asphalting works began in early March.

The project covered the busy Debrecen section of Main Road 4, Szoboszlói út, and the area around Erzsébet utca and Külsővásártér. The aim of the project was to increase traffic capacity and reduce congestion.

As part of the development:

• on Szoboszlói Road, the right-turn lane has been extended over a 200-metre stretch before the traffic light junction, with the creation of a new traffic lane;
• the acceleration lane in front of the primary school has been extended by 60 metres;
• a new right-turn lane has been constructed 100 metres before Arany János Street, in the direction of Külsővásártér;
• a new right-turn lane has also been created along the approximately 130-metre stretch between Arany János Street and Széchenyi Street;
• In addition, the traffic light system has been expanded and modernised.

Further major projects in Debrecen are due to be completed in May and September

It also emerged at Tuesday’s event that road users can now make full use of the junction; the cycling and pedestrian infrastructure is still under construction.

József Pántya also touched upon the other projects in Debrecen, noting that work is in full swing at the city’s road junctions currently undergoing renovation: 

Development of the next key Debrecen junction affecting Route 33 Füredi and Csigekert Street junction will be completed by May, the redevelopment of the junction affecting the A48 will be ready by September, in time for the start of the school year.

The upgrade increased the junction's capacity by 25 per cent

László Papp, Mayor of Debrecen, said that the Szoboszlói út junction is one of the city’s busiest, used extensively not only by Debrecen residents but also by those arriving in the city: a significant proportion of the traffic coming from Hajdúszoboszló via the A4 main road also passes through this junction. The current development has increased the junction’s capacity by 25 per cent, he added.
