Road building
The Transdanubia region is set to gain a new four-lane section of road as part of the Mohács Bridge project
The comprehensive road development project linked to the construction of the Mohács bridge is proceeding according to plan: the four-lane section between the M6 motorway and the 56 main road will soon be opened to traffic. On 2 April, the investor, Építési és Közlekedési Minisztérium, held a press conference in Lánycsók regarding the project currently under construction, Duna Aszfalt Zrt..
The project is part of the Mohács 500 series of events
In connection with the new Danube bridge to be built between Mohács and Újmohács, a main road totalling 28.8 kilometres in length will be constructed between the M6 motorway and Main Road 51: essentially, this involves the widening and extension of Main Road 57 between Pécs and Mohács. The first, westernmost section of this development is set to be completed soon, as the technical handover deadline here is significantly earlier, in line with the Mohács 500 event series. According to our newspaper’s information, the road is expected to be opened to traffic as early as the end of April.
Motorists will be able to use a four-lane stretch of around 6 km between the M6 motorway and the Busó roundabout, which marks its eastern terminus (named after the group of Busó statues located at the junction of main roads 56 and 57 – Ed.).
The access roads will also be upgraded
As part of the works, three further roundabouts and two mainline bridges will be constructed in addition to the aforementioned Búsó roundabout. In addition, the cycle path and connecting roads have been rebuilt, and new street lighting and public lighting will be installed. Furthermore, a road bridge and a cycle bridge will be built over the connecting roads. We reported on these works – including the construction of the bridge spanning the Marázai Stream – last year in a detailed photo report.
The event on Thursday was attended by Róbert Zsigó, Parliamentary State Secretary at the Ministry of Culture and Innovation; József Pántya, Deputy State Secretary responsible for road and railway construction (ÉKM); Dr János Hargitai, Member of Parliament; and Gábor Pávkovics, Mayor of Mohács.
A roundabout has been built in Mohács
József Pántya revealed in his speech that the roadworks associated with the Mohács bridge have, on the whole, reached a 35 per cent completion rate. He said that the roundabout decorated with the Busó sculpture group and the junction with the M6 motorway are expected to be opened to traffic before the interim deadline at the end of May.
Work is already underway on the nearly three-kilometre stretch of road between the aforementioned roundabout and the Danube bridge in Mohács, which is also under construction. Structures have already been built here – including an overpass above the railway tracks – and several „turbo roundabouts” have also been constructed between the motorway and Mohács, he pointed out.
The Danube Bridge is 33 per cent complete
At the same time, work is also underway on the other side of the Danube, where construction has begun on a section of around twenty kilometres. Here too, a 2×2-lane, divided carriageway section, featuring wildlife crossings and turbo roundabouts, is being built ahead of the 2028 handover deadline for the bridge and the associated sections.
Construction of the 756-metre-long Danube bridge is currently 33 per cent complete. Work is now underway on the piers, and the production of components and the construction of the arches are continuing.
The project does more than simply make travel between the Southern Great Plain and Southern Transdanubia faster and easier; the bridge and the road network connect Serbia with Hungary and the Balkans with Western Europe, he pointed out.
