A change of function and refurbishment could save Sármellék's railway station, which has been empty for 40 years, from ruin. The site is also a cultural and historical attraction, as some scenes from the youth film series Tüskevár, based on the novel by István Fekete, were filmed here.

The former railway station of Sármellék, located at the crossroads of the cycling and hiking trail between Lake Balaton and Lake Balaton, would continue to be operated as a tourist information centre under the name of Two Oaks after renovation.

The story of the hit film series Spike Castle takes place on Lake Balaton, where two young boys from the city travel during the summer holidays: Tutajos and Bütyök. The former's uncle, the old pecker Gergely Matula, shows the boys what it's like to live and thrive in the vicinity of nature. Most of the shots in the film were shot at the Danube, but the railway station in Sármellék also appears in the film. At the time of filming 58 years ago, trains were still running regularly here. However, the station has not been used by passengers since 1974. The renovation and refurbishment of the dilapidated building will be financed by the EU and co-financed by the national co-financing of 195 million HUF.

It will remain as it is in the film... They will keep the character of the building

The main characteristics of the building, which has been vacant for forty years and has a net floor area of 158 sqm, remain unchanged. The works to be carried out by the contractor are all aimed at cost-effective operation. The winning contractor will replace the façade windows, insulate the façade and install an air-to-water heat pump system. The floor covering and the electrical network will be renewed.

There will also be an exhibition venue and a reception area in the building

The municipality plans to create an exhibition and hospitality area on the ground floor, with offices and social facilities on the first floor. The cellar will be dedicated to wine and will also have a catering area.

A playground and a car park will also be built

Parking spaces will be built in the vicinity of the former railway facility, nearly 400 square metres will be grassed and shrubs will also be planted. Playground equipment and street furniture will be installed around the building, and a bicycle rest area will also be built. According to the public procurement notice recently published announcement published in the public procurement notice, the construction work will be carried out by the experts of TERRA ÉPKER HUNGÁRIA Kft. in Keszthely.

The project opening event was attended by Bálint Nagy, State Secretary, Member of Parliament of the region, and Károly Bonczföldi, who was an extra in the film "The Thorns" and recalled the memories of the filming in Sármellék. The centre is scheduled for completion in December.
