For decades, Diósgyőri Acélművek provided jobs for thousands of people, but now it is one of the most troubled areas in the city.

With six billion in government support, the former industrial heart of Miskolc may be revitalised. According to a statement from the local government, the non-repayable grant will be used to reclaim and redevelop the former Diósgyőri Acélművek (DAM) area. Based on the decision published in Magyar Közlöny, the amount will be used to acquire ownership of a 33.6-hectare industrial area, purchase related assets, and establish clear ownership relations.

An area with a long history can be revived

The former DAM Miskolc was a key centre of the city's industrial past, providing jobs and a secure livelihood for thousands of people for decades. However, the rust belt has now become one of the most problematic areas of the city.

In recent months, the local government has already purchased a significant portion of the industrial area. In addition to the transaction, the funds in question will also cover the operating costs of the area, thus enabling the local government to begin revitalising this long-neglected part of the city as a responsible steward.

This is what the city is planning

According to the announcement, the goal is not merely to acquire the land, but to comprehensively redevelop it so that the dilapidated industrial site in the centre of the city can once again become a living part of Miskolc. In a video message posted on his social media page, Mayor József Tóth-Szántai emphasised:

The aim is to revitalise the DAM area with green spaces and urban and industrial functions. As he put it, the process will require many years of work, and they are only at the beginning. In the near future, the residents of Miskolc will also be involved in the planning.
