What is being built?
One of Ferencváros's most important roads is being quietened and greened
Part of Mester Street may become quieter and greener as part of the Budapest Metropolitan Municipality's road renovation programme. During the construction work, which will begin in the spring, the conditions for barrier-free transport will also be established on the renovated section. Today, at a press conference, BKK signed a contract with Colas Közlekedésépítő Zrt. and Colas Magyarország Építőipari Zrt. for the construction work.
They create the conditions for barrier-free and safe transport.
BKK involved the local government of District IX and the relevant civil organisations in the planning process and also listened to the requests of local residents. A new pedestrian crossing will be created at the tram stops for trams 51 and 51A, and a zebra crossing will be installed at the intersection of Mester Street and Thaly Kálmán Street, making it easier to safely access the Szent István Technical College and Dormitory. A partially separated, protected cycle path will be built from Liliom Street towards Nagykörút, and a completely separated cycle path will be built between Márton Street and Liliom Street.
Development also supports the operation of businesses
As part of the investment, green spaces will be expanded and Mobi points will be established. The developments will also benefit businesses operating in the area: catering establishments will be able to create new terraces, and concentrated loading areas will be designated for shops.
The road and pavements will be renovated across their entire width.
The task of the Colas Közlekedésépítő Zrt. specialists commissioned with the implementation will be, among other things, the complete reconstruction of the road and pedestrian areas on the affected section of Mester Street. The section between Ferenc Boulevard and Liliom Street will be raised. With the exception of the kerbs protecting the trees, the existing kerbs will be removed and speed bumps will be built on the connecting streets. The development also includes the creation of new cycle lanes and parking lanes.
Irrigation system helps with plant care
Further developments are linked to the expansion of green areas. The storm water drainage system's drains will be renovated, relocated or levelled as necessary. Greening will play a prominent role in the renewal of Mester Street: more than 6,500 perennial plants will be planted on an area of nearly 1,000 square metres. To maintain the plant stock, 5,620 metres of irrigation pressure pipes will be laid and 20 irrigation controllers will be installed.
In the framework of the project:
- Six new pedestrian crossings will be built,
- The road surface will be renewed using 1,209 m³ of asphalt.,
- 1096 m² of large cobblestone and 1587 m² of small cobblestone paving will be laid.,
- Six traffic monitoring cameras will be installed.,
- 79 light fixtures will be installed on new or existing lampposts.
