The Kaposvár plant will have the capacity to process 1.25 million pigs annually.

One of Hungary's largest pork processors, Kometa 99 Zrt., pays special attention to shortening the supply chain. Their entire processing process (slaughtering, processing, maturing, packaging) takes place in Kaposvár, and now they can strengthen their regional presence with a significant development.

The meat processing company is expanding its capacity in Kaposvár at a cost of 45 billion forints, which will create 400 new jobs in the city, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó announced on Thursday at the site.

90% – Energy independence is the goal

One of Hungary's largest meat processing plants has always paid attention to sustainability: they use their own water, have installed solar panels on their factory buildings, and are striving to achieve energy independence in their future developments. This is in line with their recently announced investment, which will help them increase their presence in the entire European market.

According to information provided by MTI, the minister reported on the announcement of the Kometa 99 Zrt. investment that the Italian-owned meat processing company will carry out a capacity expansion worth HUF 45 billion, for which the state will provide HUF 15 billion in support, thus helping to create four hundred new jobs.

„With this investment, capacity will increase to such an extent with the new slaughterhouse, the new cooling system, and the new boning and cutting lines that it will be possible to process 1.25 million pigs per year,” he said.

The new units will be built in several phases by the end of the decade.

The aim of the project is to double production capacity. The first phase of the development will see the construction of a huge, 36,000-square-metre, multi-storey factory building. The entire production base is expected to be completed by the end of 2027. Long-term goals include the construction of a new slaughterhouse by 2029.

According to plans, cutting capacity will be increased to 50,000 pigs per week. The company will relocate its logistics base from Budapest to Kaposvár, where a 30-metre-high, fully automated warehouse can be built.

A three-storey building will be constructed: production (cutting, packaging, preparation) will take place on the lower and upper floors, while the middle floor will house the energy centre and technological service units. In parallel with the expansion, gas engine generators and a solar park will also be installed to reduce costs.
