A wooden bridge, a running track and an extreme sports park are to be built in Szeghalom – the contractor has been selected

One of Szeghalom’s long-planned development projects is now set to enter the implementation phase: the public procurement procedure has been finalised, and on 6 August a contract was signed with the contractor, BÓLEM Építőipari Kft. Thanks to this project, new opportunities for sport and leisure activities will emerge in Szeleskert, whilst several public spaces in the town centre will also be revitalised.

Sports pitches and green spaces are also being developed

The largest part of the project, totalling 201.6 million forints net, is the development of the Szeleskert Leisure Centre. Covering more than 16,000 square metres, the site will feature a promenade, a running track, a streetball court, a barefoot trail, play areas and rest areas, fishing jetties and cycle racks. One of the project’s unique features will be a wooden footbridge with a span of approximately 8.6 metres, spanning the Szeleskert Backwater.

They have also catered for those keen on sport: a 450-square-metre BMX and scooter track is being built, whilst a 568-square-metre running track and a 221-square-metre streetball court are also being created. The park will also feature solar-powered street lighting and a CCTV system.

Green spaces will also be significantly expanded: according to the plans, 226 trees and 3,477 shrubs will be planted. Szeleskert could thus become a more suitable venue not only for sport but also for walking, relaxation and waterside leisure activities.

Public spaces in the town centre are also being revitalised

The second phase of the project will be carried out at a net cost of 47.9 million forints. New benches, cycle racks, green spaces and car parks are being installed on Tildy Zoltán Street, whilst on Fáy András Street, the pavement is being resurfaced over a stretch of nearly 200 metres and the rainwater drainage system is also being upgraded. The creation of two small rest areas is also part of the project.

This development is not a new initiative: it has been in the pipeline for years, and the town had previously planned a leisure park in Szeleskert. Szeghalom has secured a grant of 320 million forints under the TOP Plusz programme for the development of the leisure centre and the town centre, and with the contractor now selected, the project can move into the implementation phase.
