The new junction, to be built by Duna Group, will be built at the junction of the M44, the M5, the 5 and the future M8.

A new motorway interchange will be created near Kecskemét at the junction of the M44 motorway, the M5 motorway and the 5 main road.

The project will be carried out by rebuilding the M5 motorway junction No. 74, known as Kecskemét North, and is expected to be completed in the first half of 2027. The investment is linked to the construction of the westernmost section of the M44 motorway, which is part of the Duna Group project. rel="noopener">Hódút Építő Kft. project, will be built on a new 33.6-kilometre route with 14 structures.

Motorists can use the new section from next spring

On the closure and reconstruction of the M5, the investor Építési és Közlekedési Minisztérium held a press conference on 10 October on the spot. The event was attended by József Pántya, Deputy State Secretary for Road and Railway Construction of ÉKM; Dr. Gyula Tamás Szeberényi, Member of Parliament of the region.

József Pántya also reported on the final section of the M44 between Szentkirály and Kecskemét, indicating that construction is over 80% complete. He said that the project is progressing on schedule, so 32.2 kilometres of the 33.6 kilometres are expected to be open to traffic next spring.

According to ÉKM, the newly built section will be connected to the main road 5 and to the M5 motorway from Békéscsaba, so traffic will be guaranteed during the construction of the junction.

The largest rural hub is being built

The Deputy State Secretary also pointed out that Hódút Építő Kft. will start the construction of the junction between the M44 and the M5 in the next few days. He reminded that from now on the M44 will continue as the M8 motorway, with the long-term plan to connect to the M7 motorway via Dunaújváros and Székesfehérvár. He added that the junction of the M44 and the 5 motorway will also be built here. All junctions will be realised as separate level junctions. "Except for the M0 ring road, the largest interchange in Hungary will be created, or the largest rural interchange," he pointed out.

He also revealed that during the construction of the junction, motorists can expect a number of restrictions. Due to the works, the exit at junction 74 will be closed to traffic coming from Szeged towards Kecskemét and Lajosmizse from Thursday.

The section after Békéscsaba is also under preparation

József Pántya also reported on another project: the planning process for another 42-kilometre section of the M44, linking the Hungarian-Romanian border and Békéscsaba, has also started. This will complete the M44 motorway from Kecskemét to the Romanian border.

Gyula Tamás Szeberényi, Fidesz Member of Parliament for the region, said that the construction of the junction of the M5 motorway and the M44 expressway is of crucial importance not only for Kecskemét, but also for the region. He recalled that the Építési és Közlekedési Minisztérium has helped to renew the city's major arterial roads, whose development will provide Kecskemét with even better accessibility. He stressed that the city of Kecskemét has not been idle either, having built or renovated 45 roads and junctions in the last five years.
