Road building
A 2×2 lane bridge built with professional bravura in a Hungarian city
Celebrating together with Satu Mare on the occasion of the completion of the city's third road bridge over the Satu Mare River, which was built by STRABAG Romania is celebrating the completion of the city's third road bridge over the Szatmár River, which was built by the Austrian-owned company. The project is the largest infrastructure investment in the Partium city in the last 40 years. It has four traffic lanes, two pedestrian pavements and a separate cycle path. The official handover ceremony will begin at 4 p.m. local time.
The border city is also particularly important for Hungarians living beyond the border, as nearly 40 percent of its population is of Hungarian ethnicity, according to the 2011 Romanian census.
The longest bridge of its kind in Romania
The structure, which began construction in May 2020, is Romania's longest cable-stayed bridge. „The 644-metre-long bridge was one of Romania's most complex and ambitious infrastructure projects, requiring exceptional precision and the expertise of highly skilled professionals.“ the company said in a statement viewed by szatmar.ro.
The crossing cost around RON 100 million (nearly HUF 16 billion at today's average prices) and comes with a 15-year guarantee.
The bridge is a harp-shaped design, supported by two piers, each 73 metres high, and 56 high-strength steel cables. The suspended structure supporting the bridge has a total weight of 227 tonnes and is designed to carry a load of more than 12,000 tonnes.
They used drone-mounted laser radar and 5D BIM
The STRABAG has taken a very modern approach to bridge design:
<To precisely adjust and tension the tether cables, the team used drone-mounted LIDAR technology (this is similar to radar, based on the principle of reflection but using light at an invisible frequency), and the resulting high-resolution data was processed by a powerful server for about 48 hours. They also used 5D® Building Information Modeling (BIM) technology for integrated design and construction, and drone monitoring and machine control systems to help them work accurately and efficiently
- are summarised on the szatmar.ro.
"This bridge means a lot to Satu Mare. The Transylvania Bridge is more than iron, steel and concrete: it is a new symbol for our city, an engineering marvel and an economic milestone for our entire community. The Transylvania Bridge was built to connect, to sustain and to inspire. Thank you to STRABAG for your seriousness and dedication through the difficult moments of this project. It is obvious that this is a company that takes its responsibility seriously" - said Gábor Kereskényi, Mayor of Satu Mare about the project.
