The project, which involves road widening and improvements to public utilities, will significantly improve traffic flow at one of the city’s busiest transport hubs.

The development of the Szoboszlói Road junction: asphalting works could begin in early March, and the project is scheduled for completion in June. The Építési és Közlekedési Minisztérium, is being carried out by HE-DO.

The development affects several junctions

The project affects the busy Debrecen section of Main Road No. 4, Szoboszlói út, and the area around Erzsébet utca and Külsővásártér. The aim of the project is to increase traffic capacity and reduce congestion.

As part of the development:

  • On Szoboszlói Road, the right-turn lane will be extended over a 200-metre stretch before the traffic-light junction by creating a new traffic lane,
  • in the section before the primary school, the acceleration lane is extended by 60 metres,
  • a new right-turn lane is being built 100 metres before Arany János Street, heading towards Külsővásártér,
  • a new right-turn lane will also be created along the approximately 130-metre stretch between Arany János Street and Széchenyi Street,
  • In addition, the traffic light system will be expanded and modernised.

A significant volume of road and utility infrastructure works

The project involves a significant amount of road construction work: over 2,500 cubic metres of hydraulic-bound material and over 3,000 cubic metres of bituminous road structure layers will be laid. In addition, new road markings will be applied across 1,682 square metres, and paving stones will be laid across more than 1,100 square metres.

The project also includes the development and replacement of public utility networks, including:

  • 641 metres of drainage channel,
  • 1,548 metres of water mains,
  • Construction of 65 metres of sewerage pipe,
  • replacement of electrical and telecommunications cables,
  • as well as the construction of a hydrocarbon pipeline.

The development will be completed by June

Work is progressing according to schedule; as things stand, the project is expected to be completed in June 2026. Once the project is finished, one of the city’s busiest junctions will be safer and quicker to navigate, which will make life noticeably easier for both Debrecen residents and those passing through.
