Road building
The main road in the centre of Újpest is to be completely rebuilt
Major transport improvements are underway in the capital’s 4th district: a 1,700-metre stretch of Pozsonyi Street and István Road is being upgraded between Madridi Street and Deák Ferenc Street.
István Road is being upgraded across its entire width
As the contractor for the project, HE-DO is also responsible for introduced, began construction on 16 March with the milling of the road surface, following preparations that have been underway since January.
During the development – which is being carried out under contract BKK without the involvement of consortium partners – specialists are carrying out complex tasks: the road surface is being replaced in two layers, the kerbs are being renewed, and a row of bollards is being installed alongside the tram tracks. In addition, the project includes pavement renovation, the installation of new drains, and the construction of traffic lights and their substructures.
A new pedestrian crossing is being installed at the Angyalföld depot, complete with street lighting; furthermore, water pipes are being replaced between Petőfi and Lőrincz streets, and a new water main is being constructed as part of a private investment project to serve the BAM property development. The surfaces of the bus stops will also be rebuilt and reinforced.
We’ll have to put up with the roadworks until next spring, but the results will be impressive
The need for this project stems from the fact that the road surface and kerbs on the section in question have deteriorated significantly, which has already been affecting the quality of travel. As this section is one of the main collector and link roads in District IV, the refurbishment will bring about a significant improvement for those using the road.
In the first phase of the works, work began in the outer lanes on both sides of the road between Madridi and Tél streets, as well as in the right-hand lane between Tél and Árpád út. The removal of the road surface will be followed by the demolition and reconstruction of the kerbs, after which local road structure replacements, kerb raising and the installation of traffic light substructures will be carried out. Following the asphalting, the inner lanes will be renovated using similar procedures.
One of the unique features of the project is that the construction work must be coordinated with work carried out alongside the tram tracks and with track closure periods, which requires a tight schedule and close coordination.
The works are scheduled for completion in spring 2027, by which time the entire upgraded section of road will be open to traffic.
