The capital's Danube protection works were developed with real bravery, while protecting the floodplain forest

The Colas Alterra provided flood protection for more than a kilometre of Budapest.

Flood protection improvements worth approximately 3.8 billion forints were carried out in North Pest. As we reported at the beginning of 2023 here, Alterra Építőipari Zrt. was awarded the contract to design and construct flood protection line 35 in the Pest-Észak flood protection section. One of the capital's seven flood protection sections is the Pest-Észak flood protection section, which mainly belongs to Újpest. Four sections of the protective line were developed in the project, with a total length of 4.5 kilometres. This includes:

  • the area behind the waterworks,
  • the high bank of the North Pest sewage treatment plant,
  • the Komp Street wall and high bank,
  • as well as the barrier on Váci út.

The investment will also provide enhanced protection for the Fővárosi Vízművek site on Váci út, thus significantly increasing the security of Budapest's drinking water supply, the Mayor's Office said in a statement.

The project was implemented in the IV. district of Budapest, in the area south of the Megyeri Csárda. During the works, the contractor had to carry out a number of utility replacements, including the laying of water pipes and the replacement of several electrical and low-current cable sections.

They have worked to minimise the environmental impact

During the works it was necessary to

  • Construction/improvement of a 1220 m long flood protection earthfill;
  • Construction/improvement of 460 m of reinforced concrete flood protection wall, including embankment and flood protection substructure;
  • 1 642 metres of maintenance road;
  • improving the impermeability of the dam body;
  • restoring the existing road surface;
  • rebuilding the gravity drains crossing the dam and leading to the riverbed.

As highlighted in the press release: thanks to careful planning and careful execution under professional nature conservation supervision, the project was implemented with the least possible impact on the floodplain forest of Palotai Island, which is under the protection of the capital.

The municipality of the capital hopes to continue the development of the dam system next year, with the aim of making more areas safer.
