According to plans, certain renovated sections of Pozsonyi utca and István út in Újpest may be reopened to traffic as early as this year. According to information provided by HE-DO, the contractor carrying out the work, the road resurfacing may be completed ahead of the scheduled deadline.

The specialists at HE-DO have almost completed the comprehensive resurfacing of the road. The project covers certain sections of Pozsonyi Street and István Road, spanning a length of approximately 1,700 metres, between Madridi Street and Deák Ferenc Street. Work is still ongoing in two further areas: at the Tél utca junction and its immediate surroundings, and on the right-hand side of István út, on the section between Árpád út and Király utca – according to the information notice
published on the contractor’s website. HE-DO is carrying out a comprehensive infrastructure refurbishment in the centre of Újpest in several phases. As part of the project, the road surface will be renewed, public spaces will be tidied up, pedestrian and cycle links will be improved, new green spaces will be created, and accessible junctions will be built.

A number of development projects have already been completed

As regards the roadworks involved in the comprehensive project underway in the centre of Újpest, work on the final sections is still to be completed. A similar situation was reported by HE-DO in relation to the renewal of the pavements. The modernisation of the water supply network has now been fully completed. The final third of the development of the cycling infrastructure is about to begin. As for the green spaces, work on the section in front of the town hall has been completed, whilst the remaining landscaping tasks will be carried out during the final stages of the project.

The Tél utca junction is being refurbished in seven stages

At this stage of the project, the reconstruction of the Tél Street junction is requiring the most working hours and manpower. As the works must restrict road and tram traffic as little as possible, the experts at HE-DO are rebuilding the junction in seven consecutive, extremely closely co-ordinated phases.

Within each phase, a wide range of trades must work in sequence without any delays: the installation of temporary traffic management systems and the recalibration of traffic lights are followed by roadworks, hydraulic engineering works, and the installation of traffic control and public lighting infrastructure. Only then can the new posts be erected, the kerbs built, the pavements and road surfaces asphalted, and finally the permanent road markings painted – whilst traffic diversions must be maintained at all times.

Work is currently underway at the Tél utca junction to improve safety for cyclists, including the construction of traffic islands, the associated modification of the drainage system, and the replacement of street lighting and traffic control poles. The works are expected to be completed by the end of October.

The entire section could be handed over as early as this year

The technical handover and commissioning process for the new pedestrian crossings has already begun. According to the plans, the asphalting of the entire carriageway will be completed by the end of October, and then, roughly two weeks later, the final traffic signs and road markings will also be put in place. After that, only the completion of minor sections of pavement, the installation of signs and administrative tasks will remain. Although the official contractual deadline is spring 2027, the project could be fully completed this year. Construction is taking place whilst traffic continues to flow; the necessary rectification of defects and the completion of the technical handover procedure may extend into the beginning of next year. Residents of Újpest will be able to use the renovated section of road without restrictions much sooner than planned, as early as this winter.
