Romania sets record in road construction, breakthrough coming this year in reaching Transylvania

This year, a total of 244 kilometres of motorways and expressways are expected to open to traffic in Romania, according to according to an analysis by profit.ro. The article's headline reveals that,

Last year was also extremely intense, with around 195 kilometres of expressways opening in 2024: last year's record-breaking base will certainly be surpassed again.

In fact, according to an ultra-optimistic scenario, this year could see the completion of as much as 284 kilometres of road, if sections of the A3 in northern Transylvania and the A8 from Târgu Mureș to Moldova are also completed.

These regions are moving forward

Looking ahead to this year's expected releases, profit.ro has announced the following, among others:

• complete several sections of the A7 motorway crossing the Moldavian part of Romania from north to south;
• several sections of the A0 ring road in Bucharest;
• as well as a section of the DEx6 motorway connecting Focsani and Galati in the Regat region.

This is what is happening in Northern Transylvania

From a Hungarian perspective, it is particularly important that more tolls are forecast for the A3 motorway, which greatly improves access to the Hungarian-populated regions of Transylvania. According to this, they will complete

• The Vaskapu-Magyarzsombor section (12.24 km) of the North Transylvania motorway;
• the Magyarzsombor-Magyarnádas section (30.06 km) with viaducts;
• also on the A3 in Bihar, the Bisztraterebes-Berettyószéplak section (26.35 km).

A 150-kilometre expressway corridor may be built in Transylvania this year

The article also mentions the possible December handover of the Bihar-Bisztraterebes section (28.55 km) with a rather optimistic scenario (five months before the deadline!). This would mean that, together with the previously completed (but currently unusable due to the lack of a connecting section) Berettyószéplak-Szilágynagyfalu section, it would be possible to drive from the Hungarian border all the way to Szilágynagyfalu on the motorway.

At the same time, perhaps even more importantly, if the other predictions are correct,

By the end of 2026, regardless of the Bihor section, it will be possible to travel on four lanes from Vaskapu in Sălaj County to the border of Székely Land, i.e. to Târgu Mureș. This 150-kilometre continuous expressway corridor will significantly shorten the journey to the interior of Transylvania and will certainly change the habits of motorists travelling there.
