Railway line between Szeged and Timisoara to be built, ministers agree

Not only the development of the railways, but also the opening of a new border crossing and the construction of a bridge were on the agenda.

Hungary and Romania have signed a transport agreement under which they will start preparations for the construction of a railway line between Szeged and Timisoara and establish a new border crossing point by 2027, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó announced in Bucharest on Wednesday.

After his meeting with his Romanian counterpart, Sorin Grindeanu, the Minister said that the document also foresees the creation of a joint working group and the early preparation of a feasibility study.

"A rail link between Szeged and Timisoara is clearly in the interest of both countries, both economically and nationally"

- he said. He said that the common goal is to apply for European funding for the project.

New border crossing built

According to Péter Szijjártó, an agreement was also reached to build a new border crossing point between Hungary and Romania at Kübekháza by 2027.

He also said that the two governments had prepared and submitted an application to the European Union for the reconstruction of the Szent Gellért Bridge between Magyarcsanád and Csanád, which had received a very positive evaluation, so the parties are awaiting the announcement of the results in September (for more information about this project, see here – ed.).

"So now the Hungarian-Romanian border cooperation will be even more dense, there will be more roads, hopefully a bridge and another rail link", he said.
