With the restoration of the original high-roofed structure, the station building will once again become a prominent feature of the Béke Avenue skyline.

On Wednesday morning, Építési és Közlekedési Minisztérium (ÉKM) reported on the renovation work at the Gyula railway station at a press conference held on site. The details of the investment were presented by Deputy Minister Nándor Csepreghy.

The axis of the building returns to the line of Béke Avenue.

As previously we have previously reported, the comprehensive development and reconstruction will be carried out by Jánosik és Társai Kft.. The objectives of the investment include the modernisation of the building structure and functionality, ensuring compliance with energy requirements, and making the station's spaces more transparent.

One important element of the planned interventions is the restoration of the original high roof, which will realign the building with Béke Avenue. The façade design is based on the character of the locally protected warehouse building, with the use of brick decorations and plastered surfaces.

The structure and interior layout of the building will be completely renovated.

At Thursday's press event, Nándor Csepreghy explained that the government and MÁV are repaying an old debt with a reconstruction project worth over one billion forints. The national station renovation programme affects 36 locations in 14 counties. Approximately 800 billion forints will be spent on renovating a thousand kilometres of railway track and upgrading the vehicle fleet: a thousand new Hungarian-made buses will be purchased and a hundred new, state-of-the-art locomotives will be put into service.

Ernő Görgényi, mayor of Gyula, recalled that on 23 February 2022, he and József Kovács, member of the National Assembly, announced that work would begin in the summer; however, due to the Russian-Ukrainian war that broke out the next day, the project was put on hold. János Lázár promised during the local election campaign that the plans would be reviewed. As a result, on 23 January this year, the developer MÁV Pályaműködtetési Zrt. handed over the work site to the contractor, Jánosik és Társai Kft..

One day before the press conference, Ernő Görgényi, mayor of Gyula, announced on his social media page social media page that scaffolding had already been erected on the southern façade of the admissions building. In addition, containers are in place on site to serve as a waiting room, ticket office, toilet facilities and other functions while work is being carried out on the building.

The square in front of the station will also be redesigned: a roundabout will be built.

The renovation covers the entire building, which is nearly 1,000 square metres in size, as well as approximately 710 square metres in the immediate vicinity of the building. The investment will include the installation of new bicycle storage facilities and a passenger information system, and the building will be made accessible.

As part of the TOP Plusz programme, the local government will also rebuild and renovate the square in front of the station. Deputy Mayor István Kónya reported on the details of this at the press event. The 960 million forints in funding will be used to convert the three-way junction into a roundabout, build new pavements and cycle paths, bus stops, car parks and a taxi rank at the railway station, and pave the area with paving stones. „As the project involves a public road, Magyar Közút Zrt. is the city's consortium partner,” said István Kónya.

Ernő Görgényi indicated that the station renovation is expected to be completed by May 2027. They would like to begin work on the square in front of the station in the second half of this year, and it must be completed by the end of 2027. „Then the city's main street, Béke Avenue, will run between two impressive squares, as Kossuth Square was renovated in 2006,” he said.
