Bound track
Demolition of embankment begins on closed section of Ajka-Veszprém railway line
At the end of February, the replacement of railway cables on the left side of the railway track was completed during the restoration of the closed section of line 20 between Veszprém and Ajka. The CEO of the MÁV Group posted on Facebook about the project, which is being carried out by Swietelsky Vasúttechnika, detailing the cable replacement in figures. „The replacement and relocation to a new route affected approximately 230 metres of GSM-R optical cables and 380 metres of other railway cables,” wrote Zsolt Hegyi.
During the development of Építési és Közlekedési Minisztérium, the contractor then began dismantling the railway embankment. „During the demolition work, approximately 13,000 m³ of soil was excavated and placed in a temporary storage site,” revealed the CEO.
Work will continue in the second half of next week with the construction of the drainage system.
A nine-metre-deep structure is being built
As previously reported, restoration work on the closed section of the railway line between Veszprém and Ajka began in early February. Inadequate drainage caused accelerated track deterioration on the 150-metre section in question, resulting in the line being closed in December 2024.
The most affected 150-metre section was damaged to such an extent that a structure approximately nine metres high (actually „deep”) had to be built and several thousand cubic metres of earth had to be moved. Zsolt Hegyi confirmed this in his recent post: „On the section of railway line No. 20 between Ajka and Veszprém, everything has to be rebuilt several storeys deep so that the track can finally get new rails.”
