The development is closely linked to the ongoing vehicle procurement project, the introduction of new CAF trams.

Following the conditional public procurement procedure, BKK concluded contracts with Főmterv Zrt. and Magyar Energia Centrum Kft. for the development of the Száva depot in Ferencváros, Budapest. As part of the investment, the current hall, which has been partially renovated, will be rebuilt, a new warehouse will be constructed, and the power supply will also be upgraded, according to a statement by BKK.

The BKK launched a conditional design tender at the beginning of October last year the development of the Ferencváros depot; and then announced at the end of October that it would issue a conditional public procurement tender the development of the Angyalföld depot and tram line 14.

The carriage sheds and buildings also need to be upgraded.

The recently published summary also discusses the project's objectives. As new CAF trams continue to arrive in Budapest, the tram depots used for storing and maintaining the trams, as well as their buildings where necessary, must be upgraded in parallel with the renewal of the fleet.

In addition to the vehicles already stationed there, the Száva depot will also store and provide comprehensive maintenance for some of the 46 short CAF trams arriving. To this end, the depot needs to be modernised and expanded.

The total net value of the contracts now concluded is nearly HUF 340 million. The design contracts will come into effect once the necessary funds are available; in a favourable scenario, the detailed designs could be completed in the first half of 2027.

New tracks are being built, the roof platform is being expanded

The BKK explains the winning designers' task in more detail:

  • the internal reconstruction of the existing hall,
  • the construction of a new warehouse building,
  • and indicating the planning of power supply improvements.

„The arrival of the new trams justifies the expansion of the hall's maintenance capacity, ensuring the maintenance and storage of vehicles on additional tracks,” the statement explains. The development therefore includes the construction of new tracks, the extension of the existing roof platform and the construction of a new roof platform, as well as the installation of lifting cranes.

New steel-framed hall for materials and components

In order to ensure trouble-free operation, the power supply to the depot needs to be further developed so that vehicles can enter and exit smoothly in all seasons. To distribute the increased load, the power supply to the depot must be divided into two sectors.

Parallel to the continuously growing vehicle fleet, the number of necessary spare parts is also increasing, and the current storage area is no longer sufficient to store them. Therefore, a steel-structured hall with an area of almost 800 square metres would be built to store materials and spare parts.
